Default The Goldeye Experiment

Well, I have heard Goldeye are actually pretty good smoked, and my wife and I have been catching a few on the Athabasca River (Fort McMurray) so I thought we'd save up a few and try them smoked, they turned out REALLY good!

I ate sooooo much smoked goldeye this week that I smell like a dutch tobacconist,, and it far outweighs bran in taste and keeping you regular. What a fun fish, slower bite for us down south than our last outing but a few more for the smoker.

Next time fillet and leave skin and scales on. take out the ribs. Smoke, and the meat will be golden, and the pin bones are easy to take out.

seeings how the goldeye flesh is very soft to start with, after the smoking process does it stiffen the texture of the flesh?

For our smoker we sometimes cut off the tails to let the fats run out, we have different methods for different smoked types,,, however, if we end up with a softer fish, it works nice as a sandwich spread. Speaking of which, a few more should be ready RIGHT NOW!!!!

Nice! A smoker is definitely something I'm gonna look at buying soon! What do you use to catch gold eye? I've only caught one which was probably a one off thing. Caught it on a small spinner. Put up a little fight, then came straight in like it gave up haha. However it came unhooked right as I was about to pull it out of the water to grab a picture, so I've been searching for one to grab a picture with.

minnnows and worms work well. there are also catchable on dry flies under the right conditions.

for those that dont know, they are pretty greasy/fatty. smoked seems to be about the only waqy most peopel can stomach them.

for those wanting to catch and release, these are a very fragile fish. if you are releasing, be very gentle...in fact dont touch them if you can help it. of course that goes for all fish, but these things often give up and look pretty dead as soon as you set the hook. if you drag one up on shore its pretty well done.

Heres one worth clogging the arteries over,,, go hang a few packs of bacon, then fry it up,,, oh dear, its pure smoker porn.

My godfather designed his basement with a brick fireplace and some of the smoke is diverted to a large smokehouse outside. Whoever owns that house now better be using it because that house smoked like no other.

I want to try a honey garlic recipe.... Oh, and picked up some cheap pink salmon to smoke, ahhhhh old technology rules

Yeah, I was looking at some a couple weeks back, shoulda bought one while it was on sale! Oh well, gives me another reason to keep checking back at Cabelas!

Yeah I've noticed the Goldeye just seemed to give up as I was reeling in. Good to know for next time to be extra careful with them. The one I caught, I didn't get any hands on, as well it swam away pretty fast, I think it did fine! Thanks for the tips!

Ive heard if you freeze them for a couple months before you smoke them they wont be as greasy. wouldnt mind trying them smoked if I could find some clean water they are in. never seen them with red fins, courtesy of the oil companies up there?
