Lake Newell perch help

I want to go after some perch while im there this weekend. I have never caught perch before so i have no clue where to start. Light or Medium action rod? Bait? Bottom or suspended. I cant bring the boat so i will be fishing from shore, I know a few good spots.

Anything helps.
