does anyone know if you can eat pike roe and if so what must be done to it?

Yeah, I just seen it on the wild gourmet show. They just washed it and threw it in the frying pan. Let us know how it tastes?

I've eaten perch roe.
dipped in milk rolled in seasoned flour or cornmeal and fried.

perhaps its only toxic in breeding season.
I made caviar from it last year but threw it out after I read that. I am still alive after a few bites....ummmmm

I've eaten pike roe many times - my dad introduced it to me when I was a young boy & I didn't really care for it then, but since it has kinda grown on me, and I enjoy it from time to time. I prepare it by simply leaving egg sacs whole, washing them good, and dipping them in whatever fish batter I may be using. Fry in hot oil for 1-2 minutes flipping once - don't overcook them. Once you get over the idea that it's pike eggs I think you'll agree that they are truly a tasty treat once in awhile. Walleye roe is just as good or better.

yeah ...I think you might be right I take it back...i did my own research~ and theres no real evidence its toxic... apparently pike caviar is a delicacy world over..perhaps its just during the actual laying of the eggs??
...and i went and tossed it! i ate a few tablespoons with cream cheese..tasted fine.
they looked like real caviar after curing, I have a recipe for it, you salt and strain them if you want. I used to fry trout roe in butter then put it on toast.

my dad love pike roe he just rolls in flour and fries it, its an aquired taste which i dont have LOL

BTW Burbot roe is also a delicacy but I'm still trying to catch a big one with ripe eggs, the big one I got on Friday was a male unfortunately but boy was the liver tasty . I had a nice pike last month with eggs inside but didn't try them out as they looked underripe. Does anyone know the best time to eat pike eggs? I'm assuming just after ice out as they are about to spawn.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't taking females in pre-spawn be a more effective way to kill a fishery than, say, introducing a non-native species (read perch) as discussed in other threads?

Pike roe caviar is a bad idea
Did the online research, the raw roe of the freshwater pike can definitely be poisonous. The symptom is severe diarrhea (personal experience confirms this effect.) The toxin is apparently destroyed by heating to boiling temperature, so cooked roe would not be a problem.
I'm sticking to whitefish caviar from now on, no more experiments.

well, I have tried most of the fresh water fish roe and Pike is not the best for sure. Burbots is great as well as any from salmon family.

I have eaten pick roe as well as roe from other fish many times.
We always fry ours with a little salt and pepper. I like it, but some may not.
To each their own.
