Default Grouse Loads

So whats the preferred load in a 12 gauge for grouse ?
Are you shooting the high end game bird loads or just using target loads ?
Any one use full chokes for grouse .As I have a shot gun with a fixed full choke on it

Trap loads work well for grouse3/4 or 7/8 oz .
Full choke will work.
I have shot them with 3/4 oz and 7/8 oz loads with 12,16,20, and 28 gauge

Last year my son shot of ruffies with his 12 gauge drilling (mod/ full) using maximum dram 1 1/4 0z #5's
Crossing shots through the poplars and spruces- no more damage than if he had used a lighter load.
The same day I killed one with my 16 gauge drilling using 7/8 oz loads ( same chokes) with the same results

I have used #7-1/2 target loads, and they work just fine. If you are ground swatting them, a full choke is ideal, if you shoot high, and the bottom of the pattern hits the head/neck

I usually use 7 1/2 shot but starting to like # 6 shot. Little better for the longer ranges. Close bush shots #7 1/2 or even #8 will work.

Sounds like anything will work . I was using 7.5 target weeks ago ,thought maybe a hotter load would be better but i guess i will be pulling lead out of the meat more as they go deeper into the bird .

Been using 7 1/2 Federal target loads . Shooting a full choke single shot. Pattern the gun first and it works great. I also use target ammo in my 20 ga. Grouse never complain .
A 30” is long but if that is what you have then it’s just right. Better a 30” barrel gun you are used to shooting than 20” barrel you can’t hit squat with .
