Default Humminbird 999hd si

So i am either really early orreally late. Just bought this unit at the end of Oct on a50% off sale at WSS in Calgary.

So the 11 year old asked me why i needed a new one and as i fumbled for words she said -" oh your current unit is kind of from the dollar store " . Yes this is correct as its only 2 years old but come with my new boat.

Anyways with the mapping does one use what is supplied or LakeMasters or Navionics ? Just wondering how well canadian waters are mapped and which to avoid.

Any other tips are also appreciated.

Thanks

Navonics Plus is pretty good in Canada. Most of the popular lakes in Alberta with the exception of Newell.

navionics is not very accurate on some lakes.

Default Insight genesis

Go to Insight Genesis as there are many of the local lakes that have been mapped by fisherman and they are posted online. Best thing of all is it is free....

Insight is good on some of the southern lakes, up north here it is still pretty lacking.

That said Navionics is the other better choice and it is barely worth the money due to the highly inaccurate mapping on many lakes.

But some mapping even if inaccurate is better then no mapping which is what the new Humminbird will have...

Insight Genesis works on Lowrance units - Humminbird uses autochart.

Did you get a card from Navionics with your unit when you bought it? If so contact Navionics and they will probably upgrade the card to your liking. There is a time limit on how long you have to register the card for the upgrades so get on it if you haven't done it already.

sorry, I have been away for a bit.

it supposedly comes with Hummingbird ContourXD.

Navionics is optional for Lakemaster, Gold/Hotmaps and Platnium.

there was a Gold Canada and a Gold Canada and SE Alaska on sale for $185. they possibly still are, but this supposedly is discontinued by Navionics, in January 2016, so I don't know if that means you get what you get and no updates.

no card was in the box, so I assume that Contour XD is programmed in.

Which has no Canadian maps at least not in Alberta.

The navionics maps help a bit but are only slightly better then a lake outline.

There are no accurate Alberta maps other then the ones on insight genesis or ones that guys have made for themselves.

Insight genesis won't work on the Humminbird though and still has poor coverage on most lakes(down south there are a few well mapped lakes).
