I'm on call. I don't mind but it does suck when your in the middle of dinner and the phone rings. But it is what it is.

No holidays off as a chef in a large hotel. Missed 20 years of Christmas Eve-Christmas Day, Boxing Day. New Years Eve and New Years Day

No OT paid as a chef. Give up all your holidays just so they can reduce your hours every January in the slow down month

Never had to yet on Xmas , but volunteered this year , so on call ATM , to help pay for the 72 Nova I just got , muhahahahaha ..... scheduled though for the 28 to go back to work

A few years ago we had to call a plumber on Thanksgiving day because a root blocked the sewer pipe and flooded the basement.
The guy came over just when he was on his way to dinner with his family.
He rooted out the pipe and vacuumed up the water.
I stayed home while he was there while the wife went on to dinner.
He was gonna clean the place up but I told him that I'd do it myself.
Paid him and gave him a hefty tip for his troubles.

I used to volunteer to work during holidays before I was married so my co-worker with families could be at home. I didn't really mind but what I hated was when a customer would say things like "aww, it's too bad you have to work on a holiday". Ya, I have to work because you couldn't do this before or after the holidays.

I've never had to work Christmas, but appreciate those that do.
A few years back our furnace when out at about 2AM Christmas morning...the temp was -28.
Felt bad for the fellow who was on call that night with my service provider as he had two young children who were likely opening their presents about the time he was finishing up putting in new motor.
Didn't begrudge him the emergency service fee one bit.

Yea I am again, 48 of us in the oil sands, the joy of being a HD mechanic in mining, I guess, We got a bunch of steaks and spuds, and doing a barbeque for Christmas dinner, few off the guys working, so those with youngsters, can be home for Christmas.

Not working the paying job but definitely on call for 911. We have been called out for house fires and vehicle incidents at Christmas and new years far too many times.
Here's hoping everyone is safe.

Agreed. My 3 year old flushed something down the toilet yesterday. Completely blocked, hours of plunging; and it still would not even slowly drain. 100% sealed off.
Worst possible timing, mom dad and grandma coming for christmas dinner. I think it was a paw patrol stuffie.... But we have a bathroom downstairs, and not going to call a man away from his family on christmas eve. Just would like to say many thanks to all of you who work through the holidays.
