We were lucky enough to fly-fish the Highwood River and its tributaries on June 16 & 18 and had a great start to the season.
The water level was lower than normal for this time of year but it is very clear and great for fishing. Insect hatches are just starting and Cutthroats can be caught on a dry fly. As always the Highwood River is very busy because of its proximity to Calgary, but if you hike into areas away from the crowds you will be rewarded.
Mayflies are already hatching in the early afternoon and a well presented Drake can bring the big ones to the surface. Also small nymphs were working well in the morning and we caught Cutthroats, Rockies and even Rainbows in the Eden Valley & Kananaskis Park area.
So if you have the fishing fever you have to try the Highwood River and its surrounding creeks. Conditions are the best they have ever been for this time of year and you can safely wade in the river. Also be aware there is bear activity in the area so bring your bear spray.
Enjoy some of our fishing photos from yesterday.
Cheers and Tight Lines,
