Default Fly Fishing 2015

I recently inherited a lot of fishing equipment from my late father, including a small amount of fly fishing gear. I bought a TFO package and practiced a bit of casting in the park behind my house.

Went out with a buddy on June 24th for my first attempt at fly fishing. We were in the Elbow River, west of Calgary. After 20 minutes of technique work I started to take to it. This turned into a great evening of fishing. I caught a couple of brown trout, including this guy who measured in at just under 45cm. Its zero catch limit there but nevertheless I was proud.

Hmmm. I guess I'll say it.

Please follow prudent catch and release principles. Many would frown on letting a catch and release fish flop around on gravel. Try a knotless fish net and take a pic with the fish still submerged in water.

45 cm is a heck of a nice Brown for your first day out on fly gear...and a great catch from the Elbow in general. Like Jadham said, you might want to work on handling/release, but it's definitely exciting to get a fish like that!

Understandable comments on catch and release principles - just to clarify the fish was retrieved to a rubberized net and quickly returned to the water. I had him pointed upstream for a brief period of time (it was a reasonably long retrieve). Once he got his wits he darted over to the shallow bar you see in the pic - that is where my buddy took this picture.

Funny you mention that. The fella that took the picture mentioned that legend has it years ago a truck carrying brown fry had an accident on a Calgary bridge and dumped the entire contents into the Bow, and that's how they got started there. I didn't fact check it or anything but it's a cool story anyway.

According to this, they have been here since 1924. I have heard that same story as well. Always wondered how much truth there is to it.
