Default Do you stop fishing for trout?

Hi guys:

This summer could get a bit on the ugly side of things temperature wise.

Low runoff, low precipitation, high daytime temperatures spell trouble for trout.

Some reading;

Please consider fishing evenings and mornings only on lakes and rivers. And just because a lake is aerated, doesn't mean all the risk is eliminated. Or consider fishing for whitefish, goldeye, pike, and walleye.

Most of all, carry a thermometer and take a reading. No sense in trying to guess.

Just some food for thought. This could be summer of pretty much sticking to high altitude mountain water for trout.

Good info Smitty
Being strickly a catch & release fisherman, I've always stayed away from the warm waters that hold trout. The fishing isn't very good and the mortality rate goes way up.
With the winter, spring & summer we're having so far, I'm going to have to keep a closer eye on the temperatures of the areas I normally do fish in the summer. I hope others do too.

Smitty thanks for posting this very important material.I threatened to shoot this sob at Beaver one day.Hotish day, fishing so so.But this guy was catching fish.He was using whatever bug, point was.He fought the fish using a 2wt,with 6x tippet.Exhausted the fish/killed them. You got to land your fish quickly, revive them, preverably in a net,so you can monitor there status..

During hot spells I keep off our warmer waters like the Red Deer brown trout tribs etc. Once it's hot, most of my fishing takes place in the high country where water temps stays cold all summer.

I'll assume that you're attempting some dead trout humor.

Cause otherwise your statement would need some modification; 1. Catch 2. Release. 3. Kill

Actually, at our pothole put and take lakes, people would be better off just keeping the 1st 5 fish they catch then stop fishing.

Some of my favourite places do not become good for fishing until August 1.

Why? It takes a while for the Mr. Trout to increase his metabolic rate and get hungry.

And Mr. Caddis Fly and Missus Mayfly hatch at about the same time.

And that is when Catch and Release fly fishing goes into high gear.
