Master Angler Alberta (Manitoba)
https://anglers.travelmanitoba.com/m...program/rules/
Manitoba has a very cool "Master Angler" program for their fisheries. I love the idea of certificates and badges for master angler status fish.
It's too bad Alberta doesn't have something similar. Regardless... how do you guys measure up from fish caught in ALBERTA?
I got 5.. Lake Trout, Pike, Walleye, Burbot and Perch. Earns me a "Silver Badge"

How do you guys measure up??

This is an amazing program , my father and I traveled to Manitoba several times in the 90's and we are still listed in the record book Once recorded in the program we got badges, pins and other great stuff in the mail to make you feel great about fishing in Manitoba.

How many people would support a program like this here in Alberta?

personally don't like anything promoting killing the biggest breeders, so measure, picture and release, okay for the big girls.

Yup, but the hitch is that posing for pics is hard on fish, especially if folks aren’t experienced fish handlers or well prepared. It’s painful to watch how fish, especially larger pike, are handled by some. Hoisted by the gills into the boat, dropped onto the tin bottom...flopping and banging around until “quiet” enough to remove the hook, then finally, the hero pics. If the fish struggles during the photo shoot, it often winds up on the tin again. Not unusual for the whole process to take a few minutes. How many times can a fish survive that?
I think social media has unintentionally killed a lot of fish.

I'm Manitoban, and have grown up with this program. It's good and bad......
It's good as a promotional tool for Hunt Fish MB.
It's bad for creating unnecessary extra pressure on certain fisheries. People look at the MA records and then go there to fish.....and it gets wildly over-harvested.
I'm on a couple of Manitoba fishing messageboards, and the real serious anglers refuse to ever post their catches to the MA record books, because they don't want others fishing there. Makes sense to me.

I am in the same boat as I grew up there too. I have master ones listed in the popular places, red river, assiniboine river, but the body of water that really produces and I love... nope wont find a single listing in there. Even though catching a couple of master anglers there is guaranteed everytime I have been.
I still do use it a lot looking at dates to see when my best bets are as now its a longer drive to go fishing there.
