Default 7mm Rem Mag Moose/Deer Combo Bullet

Hey Guys,

Will probably draw a cow moose tag this year in the area that I also hunt whitetail's. I have a 7mm Rem Mag and want to find a bullet that will be good for either opportunity.

I have been told a 175gr Nosler Partition would be perfect but I haven't been able to find any of that and it is out of stock on Nosler's website as well.

I have found 168gr Nosler Accubond's and am also trying to find a 160gr Barnes TTSX.

I don't handload at the moment, so right now I am limited to factory ammunition.

What do you guys think of what I have found so far, and is there any other ammo I should be considering. I know it all comes down to shot placement but I want to make sure I have a bullet that will do a good job on both species.

TIA

Forget the partition and go with the accubond or tsx.

The lrx or ttsx are better choices compared to the tsx.

Might as well take advantage of the modern plastic tips but they aren’t needed by any means.

Partition has been doing it as well as any bullet and is proven. It lacks some accuracy and a high B.C. compared to some of the newer designs which for 99% of the shooters doesn’t matter because the animals are close enough it doesn’t matter.

I have used a 160 gr Nosler Partition in a 7mm Rem. Mag for deer, elk, moose, bears and 1 sheep in Alberta, it just simply gets the job done, I have never seen any reason to handload anything else

First of all the 7mm is a great all round cartridge for anything in our province and I don't see anything wrong with either of your bullet choices. You hit the nail on the head by saying shot placement is the most important factor and that hold true regardless of caliber or bullet type. Also, remember that the 30.30 with soft points killed a lot of moose and bear before the 'experts said you need a cannon'. Know your gun, know your limits and don't worry. You are well covered with that caliber.

I hunt the same game with mine and like the 160 nosler accubond or partition bullets.
You can go to a lower weight with the solid copper bullets and I use either the 140 or 150 grain ttsx or lrx bullets.
Try a few different boxes of ammo and choose the most accurate for your hunt.
Good luck!

I don’t have a 7 rem mag but reloading 168 gr Nosler for my 7 saum was very very easy and really accurate. Anything in the 168 range accubond would be a great bullet for moose and deer.

If the Accubonds shoot well in your gun, use them. They will be just fine. If they aren't accurate enough check out the TSX. I hunted with a 7 mag for about 30 years, I used Hornady 175 grain Interlocks for moose and bear and 162 Grain Hornady for an all round bullet. Both killed moose and bear as well as deer and many other critters just fine.Your limitation will be finding a few boxes of whatever shoots well in your gun, the actual bullet choice isn't that big a deal, except I would never use a load that had Berger or any other target bullet in it for hunting.

Default 7MM bullet choices

I have used Sierra Gameking BTSP bullets since late 70's in both 7MM MAG and 300 win mag and have always been happy with the end result as long as I did my part. Factory loaded Federal Premium 165gr. Sierra Gameking BTSP with nickel plated brass is what I would suggest as a viable option. Good luck on moose draw and have an enjoyable season.

I bow hunt about 90% of the time now, but when I do rifle hunt I use my T3 in 7mm Rem Mag for everything. Loaded up with 150 gr TSX

I use the 160 NP in my mod 70. It just plain works at all ranges out to 450 yds which is about my limit.

Default bullet choice

In my 7mm Rem Mag I shoot the Barnes 145g LRX and its extremely accurate and puts game down. ( no lead fragmentation either)

Have done the job very well.

I have used the 140gr and 150gr TTSX for pronghorn, to deer, to elk and moose, with excellent results.

150 TTSX, 160 AB or NP.

Done.

I have no complaints with ttsx or hornady gmx bullets in 7mmRM .270WSM or .2506. My wife and I have killed elk with these bullets in these cartridges.

I would suggest a lighter bullet than in your original post.

TSX/TTSX use 140 grain. They don’t loose weight so you will still be ahead of a normal bullet.

For a nosler partition you would also be fine at the 140 grain, but 150 or 160 would be fine. I think the 175’s are not needed unless you are hunting grizzly bears or other heavy animal like that. Moose are easy to put down if you make a reasonable shot.

For reference to the Barnes suggestion I took a large prairie bull a couple years ago with 300 SAUM and 150 TTSX through both shoulders and both bullets were caught in the hide on the off side. I only shot twice because I have learnt in the hooves are not in the air that is the best thing to do.

I’ve been using various 140 gr bullets in my 7mm Rem mags for >30 years on all types of big game. The last few years I have been loading Nosler Accubonds and have had great results with them. They are accurate and perform well in smaller animals like Pronghorn, on large moose, and everything in between. I haven’t had the need to shoot the heavier bullets.

x2 I a hunt with the Federal Trophy Bonded for everything. Any good bonded or mono-metal bullet in 140gr will do you fine.

Default 7 Rem mag

A 160gr Nosler Accu-Bond will do 40" of moose and retain 70%+ of it's weight.A 140 gr will put any moose that ever lived in the freezer.

Lots of bullets will work. If this thread doesn’t make that obvious. :-)

A counter part of mine in Department of Livestock uses the 175gr partitions in a 7mm mag when they need to put down bison. Works very well. If you can’t find it I would not be opposed to an accubond as moose and deer wouldn’t require near as much penetration as a bison would. In reality I would have no problem shooting Remington corelokts if that’s all you could find.

I'm a big fan of partitions but I've found even with good placement on deer I have had significant tissue damage. This has been with 160 gr.

I've shot deer with 150 gr and 175 gr Federal Fusions but everything I read puts these down the list as a good option for elk.

Perhaps an Accubond as an alternative?

Nosler accubonds are a excellent choice. I've had really good success harvesting elk, moose and deer with them. Excellent expansion and lethal.
Nosler ballistic tips have exactly the same shape as accubonds but half the price. I use the ballistic tips to get an accurate round, then go to accubonds to finish the load development.
Both partitions and accubonds are my go to when it counts.
My 2 cents worth of advice

im shooting the 120gr TTSX, but with pulling my moose tag this year, im also looking into other options.

The 120gr would probably suffice, but im interested in the 145 LRX or 140 AB.
