Default Ice ice baby - Slivers86 ice fishing thread

Caught my first fish through my first hole in the ice today out in k country. Got 6 brookies and 1 tinnny rainbow! all in all a successful day. Most areas of the water were 5-7" thick. I used a hatchet and got through in about 20 seconds each of my holes.

I'll post a pic of the first, and largest brookie of the day.

I put 'em all back today, but next time I'll be going for dinner!

All of the ponds/standing water in k country looked frozen. Did not make it to kananaskis lakes, but Ghost resevoir is looking about 85% covered, with visible snow. The inlet at Ghost river is still open water, but as beeguy and I found tonight, it was icing quickly..the burbot show is over folks

How did you know the rainbow tasted tinnny if you didn't keep it? Good job J. You still engaged with your new addiction?

TR, you're alive!!! I'm very addicted. turned the hat around and stared into the darkness today... think a hand line would have worked better where I was... poor little guys never stood a chance

This poor little girl wasn't too happy with me, but I only kept her out for a quick photo and put her back down to get a little fatter for me to take later on

Actually kind of looks like I squeezed her, but she just flopped at the moment I snapped it for all of you photo critics out there.

Nice looking trout. New fishing addict and I'm suffering cold weather withdrawal. My other half is rolling his eyes cause I started talking ice fishing. Not ready to invest in it yet, but its getting more tempting by the second.

lots of people on the forum who ice fish, Im sure someone local could take you out on the ice to see if you are interested enough to make the investment in a bunch of gear.

Default day 2 :)

WEll, I am going to adopt this thread as my ice season thread, unless something earth shattering happens. So here's my second day Ice fishing.
TR and I had a fabulous day of peering through dark holes, and pulling these beauty's out! I ended up with 1 today... WTF... and TR ended up with 4.. here's my pre dinner wash-up! Frying as we speak! Today I realised that my hatchet was easy to get through 6" of ice, but god is the auger soooo much faster!

Edit : the big one here was 1lb 2oz, which is my personal best... but not the best of the day

I'm mostly catch and release my self when I fish through the ice. Unless I hook something deep. Alot of the time when I go for burbot I use bait, and sometimes they inhale it and close the trap. If the would just open their mouth I'd release em. But when they done cooperate they get eaten.

Nice brookies.

Good luck with the addiction. For me it just gets worse every year and before you know it you have more gear then you know what to do with but still want more every time you are out shopping.

I can't wait for ice around here. I will be hopefully getting a few whites through the ice the first trip and then move on to perch, walleyes, brookies, and some rainbows for the rest of the winter.

I'm hoping to cover walleye, perch, pike, MORE BROOKIES!!!, bulls in lower k, and the regular trout spots. I'll always be looking for people to 'explore new ice' which means baileys, coffee, and a hell of a good time no matter what

Default Wednesday anyone?

Looking for a partner for wednesday. I'm generous on the driving part, or pitching gas, or food, whatever! Resevoirs should be nice by wednesday, and I'll have a pike setup! Let me know through here or PM! Tuesday I might hit the ice as well!

Well, the day went good. Here are a few photos.

Took the spray lakes road to k lakes, than 40 to hwy 68, than powderface trail to elbow falls area.

Another brookie.. new spot though just to tease you all

A rainbow while driving through Morley area... on 1/2" of slush!

A moose licking salt off the road... yes, he knelt down.

My poor car bogged down, had to clean the rad off a few times.

The bow river, ice jammed up near Morley

And Spray Lake through the snow.

Was a fun day, too bad nobody wanted to come

We saw a guy stuck near the spray lakes campground, west end of the dam. Come to think of it, it was an SUV. Sounds like you had a real adventure!

Yea, not me... little sunfire with winter tires and a brain behind the wheel had a close call on powderface trail though, didn't expect a grader to be on the other side of a blind hill... even at 35km/h it was a tough stop... we had team work though, and got through it

Saw a nice buck near elbow falls just after that moose too
