Burbs
I don't particularly like them but I always throw them back right away or take them and give them to someone who does like them. I have friends that actually make trips to grist specifically for burbot. If they made marrying livestock legal people would do it just because it was legal. Human nature unfortunately.

I'm sure with your barbs, bait, snags, inadequate rigging, you have that covered.

Excuse my ignorance but do Burbot pose a threat or have any kind of negative effect on the fishing for the rest of the lake? If not, people who leave them on the ice should be ashamed of themselves.

though they do eat other fish, I've never heard of a lake that had been overrun with burbs. They generally coexist very well with all kinds of species.
there are burbot in a LOT of places in Alberta, including most rivers (yes, the bow in calgary) and prairie lakes.
they actually provide food for a lot of fish, especially large lakers and pike. I heard of an athabasca guide who would try to imitate burbot young with dark, elongated swim baits to catch trophy lakers

I remember reading some where a lake in the mid west US where warm water species were introduced into a man made impoundment ... and after a few winters were decimated !! After lots of head scratching the culprit was found to be burbs . At low water temps the warm water species become lethargic . The pike and rainbows in the res for the most part left the unresponsive fish alone weather from seperation of habitat. going deep keeps them from most pike predation . Lack of movement "hid" them from the rainbows. The burbs however loved the deep slow food source. Only case that comes to mind .

Unless it is within a defined management program, culling any fish is an abuse of our natural resources.
It is not the action of a sportsmen to be wasteful.

No buds. Speak for yourself. Your good at that. Quit snagging fish. It's not right. Gives all of us other anglers a bad name.

Burbs aren't ugly. I think they're the coolest looking fish out there!
Every living being should be treated with respect, being left to die gasping for air and suffering is just cruel.

Yes we'll worded. Someone almost needs to be just heartless and numb inside. I don't even do that with fish I'm eating. I at least bust them one good one to put em out, but never to suffer to death

I found this when doing some research... I guess this states that it is completly legal despite burbot being a gamefish and there being limits but I still find it inhumane to take the life of an animal for no purpose at all but your pure enjoyment of murder.
FISHERIES (ALBERTA) ACT
GENERAL FISHERIES (ALBERTA) REGULATION
Alberta Regulations
Game fish
57(1) No person who is in possession of a game fish shall allow its
edible flesh to be wasted, destroyed, spoiled or abandoned.
(2) This section does not apply to
(a) burbot,
(b) fish caught or held under the authority of a research
licence unless specified otherwise in conditions attached
to the licence,
(c) the disposal of fish at the direction of a fishery officer,
(d) fish that undergo taxidermy, and
(e) fish kept under a fish culture licence.

That's good, but you still just kill them because you "don't like them". Mybe next time be even more humane. Put aside the bonker and just slide them back down the hole so they will be there for someone who does like them later.

X2. It's beyond me why anyone would just leave them up top! Great tasting fish. IIRC they are called "poor mans lobster" and I have to agree. I think it's delicious

I've never caught a burb before, but when my buddy gave me a bag to cook up i was hooked. I too place burbs right up there with walleye, perch, halibut. I have built my new ice fishing armada solely for catching burbs.
I do not kill something unless i am going to eat it. This is why i dont hunt. I just have yet to find any game meat round here i enjoy. (The wild cow in northern ontario is awesome though).
It absolutely disgusts me to believe somebody finds their desire for "quality gamefish" to be above the law of nature.
If burbs where like Brook trout in the stewardship program i would say a different story altogether. But still to club a fish and leave it on the shore?
Why not do this? Why not offer these fish to members of the forum here that do like them. If you truly don't want these fish back in the lake im sure there would be many people who would love to take them. Leaving them on the ice is a waste.

So because you don't like something, and it's "legal", you're justified to kill it?
I could understand if they were evasive and hurt the game fish industry but they don't. I like catching them, think they are actually quite beautiful.
I guess people will justify stupidity using whatever means they can.
I can honestly say if I see someone killing them for NO apparent reason, I would step in and see if I couldn't make a point to put em back in the water.

I clicked "yes" to spur controversy, but I see several people in this thread have verbally committed to this cause already
From a management standpoint, I see no logical reasoning to allow burbot, a native species, to be wasted by anglers. In addition, allowing it is the same as promoting it as far as I am concerned and I would love an explanation on how this is helpful in promoting species diversity and management for sustainability.

I do not waste fish but guess I understand it from a commercial netters point of view if there is no market and they come up dead in the nets already what can they do?
Could they give us a note that would allow several of us to go and salvage these fish when the nets are being pulled?......should they be forced to donate to a food bank?...I can see many better options than letting them lay on the ice.
From a sport fisherman's point of view I cannot comprehend the thought process of killing and wasting any fish. I don't separate what is right and wrong buy the laws wrote about them I see no difference in someone shooting a moose and leaving it to rot vs a burbot caught and left to rot....both is disgusting to me.

you are IMO NOT a Sportfisherman but a ignorant kid that needs some maturing. Maybe when he gets out of school he can get back to us with some more tips on feeding wildlife

Crosbyfan is trolling you. He probably has never caught a fish or seen a burbot, so just ignore his attempts to say the dumbest thing possible.
It is a personal challenge with him.
Everyday is a new horizon.
