Fishing along the banks of the canal at the north end can produce some nice pike at this time of the yr.. Not sure if the regs. have changed, check to be sure. Downstream of the turbines especially near the mouth of the Nordegg R. can produce the occasional nice trout. Tight lines.

HI,
I also had some questions about Brazeau, i've only been living in edmonton for 2 years and this will be my first summer of fishing here. Just wondering if the Canal and the reservoir are connected to each other (in that you can boat right from one into the other) and if they are not which is better fishing and which is better for camping? also does this area get really busy as i'm planning on makeing a trip up there as soon as there is open water if there isn't all ready. Would i have to make a reservation or get up there really early to get a spot on May long weekend? Thanks for any help

No they are not connected but both have boat launches. Personally I have done better fishing in canal. I would suggest if you want a campsite that you do get there early, especially on the long weekend. That place turns into a zoo, lots of quadders, 4 wheelers, and dirt bikes. There also seems to be a problem with thieves, keep an eye on your stuff!

Never fished the brazeu but My favorite rig for ice off pike back when you could fish for em was a quick strike rig under a bobber with a large herring on it. Use a slip bobber if you can and add enough weight that it can be pulled under easily. The simplest way to make a quick strike rig is to buy a pack of short leaders, clip treble hooks on the end (#6-#2 is good unless you have very large bait) and clip two short leaders to your main leader so that with the bait on the hooks it hangs like a triangle with one hook near the head and the other by the dorsal fin. By big bait I mean at least 5" and up to 12" or more is not a bad thing. When fishing with very large bait (around 12 inches) you will not get many bites but when you do, Hold on!! The lures work ok but for early spring pike I've caught way more big fish on large bait.

I've only fished here once, and that was at the place labelled the "Brazeau Canal" in the regs on the map. I had a bit of success along the straight rock embankment near the boat launch.
