Default Single antler 6 point bull ??!?

Well, after many years of chasing bull elk I was finally successful last night. Everything happened so quickly when I emerged from heavy forest cover and came across a herd gazing on the move along a slope of a hill... I dropped, ranged (350yd), lined up on the last one as they were headed into the heavy bush.. checked for antlers and saw more than 3 points... legal bull!! Boom! 30-06 away.

After a very quick track, thanks to a double lung shot, I came across this strange bull... he was a 6point all right, but only has one friggen antler!! One antler is nice, the other is a strange nub lookin antler thing about an inch high off the base which could have either never grown right, or was broke off earlier this year.

Don’t really care as I am thrilled at getting such a nice meat bull for my first one.

Huge thanks to the landowner who let me drive in across his land to save us a couple hours. And huge thanks to my buddy’s house car out with me for the hunt even though he was tagged out. All in all from shot to truck was just over 4 hours.

Very happy... but....

Anyone come across a single antler bull?

I’ll try and post pics later

Congrats on your elk. I have seen lots of single antler bulls over the years. Not as uncommon as one would think. Break them off or have a head injury of some sort when they are young or growing antlers.

I shot a bull a few years ago that was a nice 6pts on one side, and the other side is a 2pts going up and a club going down.

That will taste just fine, congrats..
Makes one think though when you are out she'd hunting and looking for the other side, might never have been there in the first place lol.

Quite common, when antler growing usually banged into a tree causing the deformed antler.

I shot an elk a few years ago One nice 5 point on the one side and a 6 inch curl on the other side. When I butchered it I found a 22 caliber slug buried in the hind quarter. It had formed a solid white mass of cartilage around the slug. I thought that may have caused the growth problem but who knows. He tasted damm good.

How was your summer weather?
A good guy I know has a good number of elk on his ranch yearly and the elk racks get very brittle during drought years. Many break one sided and most have broken points. This year was one of those years.
