Default Time

Winter gets to be hectic, work till fri evening then head out to the line and get to the cabin by 10pm. Sat it's go all day checking the line and usually back by 10pm. Work the rest of the week, skinning and drying plus any repairs on the ski doo or truck before the next check. I take time off when setting the line or cutting more trail, taking down at season end.

Planning on taking the family along from Christmas to New years.

It is addicting. I hunted Whitetails 2 days is all this year because I was trapping so much. Funny I never did kill a deer or even care to after all the fun I have had trapping. Next year I will be ready to up things a bit more now I know what is going on and I have a few more tricks up my sleeve.

Nube, I'd be carefull on stretching hides in the summer seems they dry to quick. Tried it with beaver and it's for sure easier in cooler temps. Also you don't get the flys comin around.

Yes Jim..dramatically. It's good to see them rebounding from the 50's rabies poisoning campaign. Started seeing them in close proximity to towns and farms about a decade ago and now they're more wide spread.

Decided to try snaring some squirrels. Setup up a couple rat traps and a snare pole at a cache I found while snaring rabbits. Got this guy the next day.

It's pretty fun, only wish they were worth more

Yes it was a 160, sat right there just like a fisher would. That big hanging spruce was perfect for a box. Caught a marten there the week before.
Those Belisle traps work well.

Default A flyer and a gaint fisher.

Always forget to take pictures in the field...Here is one of a flyer that thought some beaver would make a good snack Sure wish there was a way to put them up, they have nice fur.
Second is of a Big old male Fisher, the Yote he is up against is an XL for reference. Actually had really nice fur, very light for a big male.

Got a late start to the season do to the work that actually pays but I'm up and running now. Tons of snow on the line and movement has been slow for days at a time. Had a slow day and only picked up 3 Marten on the last two checks before that were 12 with only 4 days between checks. The bait piles are out for wolves with fresh road killed moose and deer and the lynx are starting to move so hopefully pick up a couple on the next check. Here are a couple pics of fur and the line.

Default Interesting catches in Marten boxes

A friend sent this to me the other day from Southern B.C. I figured I'd share in light of Brians picture the other day of his odd catch in his marten box.

Headed out to my mountain line yesterday. Way less snow than foothills and lots of open water still. No wonder I have grey hair. Beautiful country though. Fresh marten, wolf, and lynx tracks.

Couple pics from the line, temps stayed between -36 to -32. One lynx was completely eaten, up to 8 cats so far. Cabin is nice and warm, supper on the stove, hot coffee.
Pulled the groomer down the trail a couple times, makes a really good job, cuts the bumps and fills in the holes. 357 is holding up the catch, gas money for the day, squirrels!!

Default Flyers

As far as I know they are not protected here, I usaully get a few every year in Fisher boxes, they seem to like a red meat snack. Unfortunately they go in the bait pile as there is no way to skin and board them, and no market for their pelts. The fisher was taken in a vertical box with a 160 using castor as bait, tipped with a little fisher stink. 2 left to catch...sure wish it would warm up and get the critters moving. On a good note the wolves have claimed my Coyote bait station....added a few snares for them as well...fingers crossed.

Default Wolf

Well did a quick check in the dark this morning, seems Mr. Wolf has taken a liking to my scent and sets on the line. He followed my sled tracks and checked all of my traps for me. Even had the nerve to stick a paw into a Fisher box, thankfully the wire held until he got his paw free. He only followed tracks into the boxes until he saw them and then turned back for trail...educated the hard way. But when he found a snared yote he showed no mercy, looked like a tractor plowed the line for 20 yards. Broke the snare off the tree and headed to the bush for a snack. No more Yote. Thankfully he found my next bait, when he comes back there is now some wolf sized wire in the trails for him. Anyone else ever have a Wolf act like this? I found it very odd for him to check walking trails with 2 day old scent on them. He must be a young male having a tough start to the winter.
