Default Recreational cabin built on public land Thurston Lake

Recently came back from Thurston Lake northern Alberta . Wall tented and had a great time . Just wondering how the menonites get away with building a cabin up there for them all to enjoy and forestry doesn’t do anything about it .The lake sits on a registered trapline not registered to them and the trapper already has his own cabin on the other end of the lake . Seems like these guys do whatever ever they want and forestry / fish and game lets it slide . They’ve been told to get rid of it yet years go by and this goes on and on . What is stopping everyone and their dogs to build cabins where ever they want on other peoples trap lines and public land .

Go stay in it. When they come around, kick em out. It’s as much yours as theirs. I think that’s asmussens trapline. Did they set up on any part of his line?

Thurston is on the nwt/Alberta border in north western Alberta. Close to bistchoe/tapawingo lodge.

Just like unlicensed trapper cabins, fish and wildlife can come burn it down and send the owner a bill

Just because they can, doesn't mean they will, they have no money to do such things any more and people take advantage of it, just like those guys

A few years ago people were driving in during the winter. Think there was a lease built right close.

It is quite the process. Notify forestry. They post . Leave for a year . Then they ask for authorization from environment minister. Then they burn.fish and wildlife really don't care.

Default What's the beef?

I'm not seeing an issue here except maybe security is laid back and lax way up there, far away from snoopy neighbors. Or the possibility that Mr. Hugepikerel might not have known/stated all the facts.

Would it be possible that the trapper doesn't want you there this time of year? Or that he is complicit with the builders? Could he be a 'live-and-let-live' kind of person? Would it be more fitting if a group of British ex-pats built the place? Or you?

What next? Squatters in the middle of nowhere!

I bet if you asked them politely they would let you use it when you needed. You should think about keeping the peace. Just saying.

There's also outfitters who are allowed to build cabins in some areas. But I agree its a loophole.

Probably on a registered trapline under the guise of it being for the trapper.

The only proof I have is that I seen it . Seems great for them but there’s rules in place to stop everyone who’s wants to from building cabins wherever they please .

YEP,there not supposed to hunt or guide out of them ,but that's not quite like a outfitter just building a cabin on crown land .The trap line cabin has been abused buy lots of hunters and outfitters,I stayed in one once a long time ago before I knew the rules ,talked to f&w they said it was a grey area . thought they were working on it .

Default Thurston

There is a registered Trapline cabin on the south river between the two lakes.
If the new cabin is located on the North shore on/near the outflow, it is likely an owned cabin (lodge). I used to know the guy with the rights to build there, not sure if He still has, or sold. That is likely who built. Though the canning on shore fishery still happens every summer up there, always has.
