for sure a B&C mule in these parts is pretty rare. they need protection to get there, and in alberta that just doesnt happen outside the bowzones.

it also shows how easy it is to get a pretty good one. they are on average a bigger deer even when young so its much more common for guys to have a good mule than a whitetail. its why ill never respect them like ido other species.

need to address muley managment in alberta??? IMO srd is trying to keep opportunity up for too many hunters applying for too few tags...i would love to see more big mulies in alberta, but would hate to give up my general archery tag. also gotta feel for the rifle guys who are looking at a tag only every 3-7 years, depending on the zone...

Not needed. Just get rid of non res tags unless though a outfitter as they will never disappear. Also archery tags don't need to be on a draw. People need to only take mature deer instead of the sinks people kill just to fill a tag.

And the chances of getting rid of non. res. tags are close to none. even if legislation was tabled, the outfitters would sue for loss of business. this is what happened when SRD was going to axe september bow season for mule bucks. all zones with an outfitter threatened to sue.

edit: did not read 'unless through outfitter' clearly...how many non res tags are sold without an outfitter involved in Alberta per year?

I agree with you entirely, i would love to see all non res hunting done away with or thier tag numbers drastically reduced.

Yep. The problem is that they can sue. Also I am starting to get a real high priority for muledeer as I can't find a place that holds more than maybe one big one if any at all. If you do most places no hunting is normally posted. So I am 100000000% in favor for way more changes to bring back the herd we use to have. Land owner tags are also a problem with producing big ones.

bump with my smallest two muley's, however, the biggest body deer i've shot was on the first deer pictured, i never weighed him but because of him i got a scale and weighed the next few at around 198 to 208 dressed, i'm sure this deer had 75 lbs on the other bucks but even adding a conservative 50 then he walked at over 300 no problem, have not been around another deer that approaches this things body size/weight

The dark horned one around 168 gross then the fatty was close to mid 160 and the bottom one was low 160 all netting in the 150's, i was simply after 4x4s for the first three and then got a bit more selective starting with the velvet buck, lucked out on the 203 both of which and come to think of it none of my first 5 were pre scouted, I'm all about just going hunting and always make a play when I saw one I wanted, the 188 deer was pre scouted and the one I wanted even though I scouted bigger. I'm not really that much of a trophy hunter, just had access to great spots that made good deer. The dark one came from a door nock as I was headed to coyote call and spotted horn by a bale driving by and bow was in truck but whitetails were kicking my but so I decided it was time to kill coyotes, that started a 6 year run. After 6 I'm finally relaxed and can pass deer I prolly shouldn't, took awhile though.

The result of a very cold day in the badlands in 2010 (I was only the lucky photographer/helper/stand-in-the-way, this is not my buck)

200-and-a-bit B&C net. Buddy was fairly happy!

Quick question for you mule deer experts. Do you guys who scout a lot through out the year ever get suprised by a buck who just shows up out of know where? Or do you usually have all the bucks in an area figured out? I have 6 years of mule deer priority and have been hesitant to draw in the south for fear that all the big deer are "spoken for" or access tied up. Do these brutes ever wander on the irrigation district ground or the grazing reserves down there? I live in Edmonton so prescouting down south is tough
