First time we saw it, he was in high brush, and we didn't quite grasp the "severity" of the situation. Second time, we had stalked around, and he had walked around in the opposite direction. He came up over a rise and sky-lined, and whether from heart attack or hunting prowess, we both flopped prone... I think it was heart attack. I hardly had time to put binoculars to face, before buddy shot. When we got to the buck, I first thought we made a mistake, because he didn't look that big.... until we pulled his left antler out of the snow!
I later green-scored it at 200 7/8" or so, taxidermist came up with 201 5/8" (net).

Yes it happens,
Prime example was drawn in 2010 and hunted a coulee religiously for the entire archery season and pretty much had names for all the bucks i saw I over and over. Was waiting for 2 bucks I watched the summer to make the mistake of crossing a fenceline and into my lap. never did they once cross. Rifle season came and got ot the second day of the opener hIked same coulee saw a buck been watching all season with a herd of does ignored him and continued. Walking back out the herd got bigger and I decided on a second look low and behold there's a new buck sporting a 14" drop tine.. Heard about him living near by but never saw him until that day.... He now hangs on my wall.

95 % I can account for every buck in the area. Scouting though for us is a year long process. But the rut does bring in the odd newbie,!

I live with mule deer right on our property and you always see the same bucks around the place through out the year, however when the RUT is on you see a few different bucks that really surprise you that come from other areas in seek of does. Deer numbers were down here in the south this year. There is lots of lease land where you will stumble across big bucks wandering around. I was able to get my buck on a lease this year, although he is not a monster like some of the deer in this post I was happy with the deer.

You put on your boots leave the truck behind and see what you find! If they were all spoken for it would be a canned hunt.

Chain 2, I shot this buck in the south west corner of our province. It does not score real big, 187 gross and nets 182. It had great weight and width. Little short on tine lentgh. Thanks for the comments.

Most land has access from the landowner, just a few areas are off limits, but those areas have grown in the past 5 years with landowners tired of the crazy hunter numbers, and the bs that goes with it. When I lived down there I spent a lot of time scouting with good success, now when I head down I know where to go from past experiences and a couple friends that hunt and live in the area have a good idea of whats around. We have found that when the rut kicks in, all bets are off. The buck you watched most of the fall is gone and new ones show up.
