Whitetail down
So this weekend my girlfriend was wanting to get out hunting with her 7 year old son and try to fill an antlerless tag. I had a perfect hay field in mind thats nicely secluded, cant be seen from any road, has two dugouts in the middle and is just a perfect spot to set the ground blind up on. I was gonna get the blind set-up a week before so it was there for a bit and deer would be used to it but of course that never happened. We got out to the field shortly after 5, drove up to the spot I was going to place it just up on top of the hill and started to get ready. If you can picture this, its myself, my girlfriend, her 7 year old son, 5 year old daughter and my 6 month old lab setting up the "tent" and it went just how you could imagine it, kids running around, playing in the "tent", tripping and falling into the "tent", yelling at me "look at these sticks I got for you!" as there mom is cutting them down, my lab stealing the sticks as I set them up to brush in the blind and chewing on them, getting branches in the eye as their running through the bush and all the other fun that comes with kids!
We were finally done at 6 got her and her son all settled in for the night and I headed out with my dog and her daughter to go do some scouting for geese for this up coming weekend while they tried to fill a tag. At around 7:30 she had a doe and fawn come out and then a nice 4 point come out about 15 yards beside them in the blind but it spooked pretty quick. Then around quarter to 8 she had 2 does and a fawn come out of the bottom of the field and started feeding in the cut hay. She was trying to figure out which doe the fawn belonged to and was going to take the one with no fawn when a buck walked out right behind them. She said at 200 yards she could tell he was a shooter, and with her eyesight thats pretty good! So I could imagine how excited she was, I should mention this is her first time sitting without me beside her to help talk her through the situation, and as she was trying to get her get into a good position and make sure he was as big as he was they must have seen some movement and just as she got on him with the rifle alls she got in the scope was a big white flag. Something I know every hunter has felt once before. I went and picked them up at just after legal and they both were still pretty excited!
So on sunday her and I head back out in the afternoon in hopes that he wasnt to spooked and might come back out again. We walked over to the blind right around 6 and get settled in. All was quiet until we had a doe and fawn come out of the bottom of the field around 7 and head out in front of us, you could just imagine the anticipation. Finally the doe got a little suspicious and they headed back towards where they came from and back in the bush they went. Then at 10 to 8 she says theres one over their, behind the dugout, so I started to look over by where she was talking about and as i looked up I seen one walk out of the bush directly across from us right where the big one walked out of last night. It turned out to be a smaller buck so I told her to get ready on the gun. He was shortly followed out by a shooter and she was ready for him. They both came walking straight out about 40-50 yards into the field before he finally presented her with the shot, and did she ever drill him! He humped right up and his front shoulders hit the ground and he pushed himself about 40 yards with his back legs before he finally stopped. Then the excitment began, I'm pretty sure her first words were " I hit him! I heard the thump!!" But I'm not sure who was more excited, her or me. This was by far her biggest buck yet and I am definatly proud of her, she has had a string of bad luck on getting a big buck the last few years and ended up taking some smaller 4 points and many antlerless. As we walked up to it she was very happy to see it was as good a buck as we thought, but one of the first thing she said was this wasnt the buck from last night, he was way bigger! So thats great news for me to know there a bigger one out there for me!
This is my first time uploading from photobucket so hopefully the pics work.

Thanks for all the congrats guys. We're still trying to figure out if we want to pay to get it shoulder mounted or not, not the biggest buk but sometimes its about the memory of the hunt and not the size of the rack.

You hit the nail on the head right there. Its definitely about the memory of the hunt and with that early season cape that would make an impressive mount.
Congrats .Your planning and experience definitely paid off.
