Might not want to take any salted hides or salt any hides that you want to use for rawhide. Any salt will help preserve the hide and is hard to get good quality rawhide without removing every single grain of salt. It starts tanning the hide and it's tough to get it dried out completely. Your rawhide will have a soft leathery dull feel and be weak instead of a gold clear look. Just my two cents from what I have learned preparing hides and braiding. Deer,horse,herefords, black angus and jerseys make some of the best rawhide. Never tried elk
