Default WMU 326 Moose

My buddy and are heading out next week to try to fill his early season bull tag. He has hunted hard but is having a tough time finding a bull. We are going to an area where he has found plenty of sign. I am wondering if anyone else has been seeing any moose in the area. And no we are not road hunters so we will be as deep in the bush as we can get.

I was out there this week, didn't see any bulls, but a few cows, off the north fork road.

A couple weeks ago we were hunting along quad trails connected to the massive electric line corridor in the North part of the zone. We were right by the Prairie Creek RV park when we hiked in. We saw a cow moose on one of the trails but no bulls.

Were they shorthorn or Hereford...haven't seen a "few cows" in the last few years in 326, same goes for elk and mule deer, even whitetails are down from the antlerless seasons. About ten years late.

Get out of your truck and walk. There are still moose there, pretty easy to find to boot. Walk some of the lower, swampy areas off the north fork and you should see a few.

Why walk when you can fly on a nice sunny day in March with a fresh snow. Over the years I have walked it many many times. Glad you are happy with the numbers cuz I sure as h... are not.

I never said I was happy with the numbers. Just sharing the animals that I observed. I'm not a biologist, and my observations certainly don't constitute a large enough sample size to draw any conclusions. So take them at face value, don't try judge my opinions from them.

Nice cabin you have there, I know the area well. In Nov - Dec you are seeing all the moose in the whole country, you are sitting right in the only winter range. Seeing 3 in Sept and 3 in Oct when rut is on doesn't equate to ton's in my book, but figuratively speaking you would be correct.

It's not as nice as it used to be with 2000 trailers a weekend camped in every opening an 5000 quads ripping the hell out of the country..well in my opinion there are a lot of moose an some real crankers but their usually seen on the weirdest places an not seen again..a lot get taken out of there every dec by natives from sask..I've seen some sad sights when they are there..same goes for white hunters as well..this thread will probly get derailed now.

Opinions do vary - I'm just an ornery old .....with a good memory so don't mind me. Between the clear cutting and your other issues things aren't like they used to be.

I said it twenty years ago, and my opinion today is the same. By severly limiting the number of tags in 326 (and other WMU), there are more moose available to feed the wolves and more moose available for the unlicensed harvests.

The moose numbers today are no more, or less than 30 years ago when it was a general tag (IMO). Mind you the dynamics have changed in the area with access and logging.

I have not spent much time in 326 the last few years, but I was always able to find moose, you have to get out of your vehicle and explore. Our success rate on moose in 326 during the rut was always 100%.....Never shot one from the road.
