Default WMU 406 Moose

Looking at using my priority 12 this year, prefer to stay close to home (okotoks) i have looked up the number of tags in this zone compared to others but havent hunted it (only hiking during summer) what kind of pressure does this area see, Especially for moose? Mostly interested in the south near mesa butte area but plan to scout throughtout.

Just looking to get some input, and am very aware success and opportunity is much greater on farmland but im far more interested in the mountain type experience

thanks,
JJ

Messa Bute holds Moose, or used to.The meadow east of the hill was good before the logging.

Like many mountain zones Moose numbers seem down.If you have horses or are prepared to pack you could score.

I drew a tag two years ago and passed on a couple of young bulls.

Check the meadows at the south end or the Gorge creek road, like I said it was good at one time who knows what its like now.

I've hunted around Mesa Butte for years, never saw a moose except for the head of a decapitated one. Lots of pressure from hunters to whom game laws are irrelevant.

Hunt moose in there often on the archery tag, I wouldn’t waste that high priority in there, some of the foothills zones south of Okotoks would be much better choices.

Agreed. Look for access to adjacent units. 406 holds moose for sure.
I've seen good bulls at Mesa, Moose Mtn, Three point, and way up near Mt Romulus. But you could do way better with those kinds of points.

Between the OHV users, hikers, and mtn bikers, it's not that fun a place to hunt.

304, 308, 312 would be on my radar.

i appreciate all the info and knowledge, especially the pin above ill check it out. I looked into some of the 300's around but between access restrictions ( i have no interest in fighting for access with landowners or lease) my other issue is the shorter season starting in november. I like the idea of having from late sept until end of season just in case something comes up with work.

It’s a tough hunt.
