Outboard repair
Hi AO,
Anyone in the spruce grove, stony plain area know of a reputable place that won't cost my first born to take an old merc 9.9 for a tune up? It starts and idles along like a dream but once you want to go in sputters and won't even get the 12 foot Lund to plane out.

Was your air vent open on your tank? I forget to open mine once in awhile that's exactly what happens.

Haha yes I've done that also but it still happens with vent open.

Gas line hooked up the right direction with the flow arrow on the primer bulb pointing towards the engine? Had that happen once or twice.

I'll have to check again but I believe the two ends of the hose are different and not capable of being switched.

BTW you can connect your hose backwards however the ball is also a check valve your motor will not start, I've done that before.

Check lines to carb for cracks etc. If you also eliminate the hose and bulb by borrowing one, try that also. The hose end fittings wear and may suck air. Eliminate easy stuff first like duff plug or plug wires. Compression check in case of head gasket if all the easy stuff fails. Could also be dirty carb. Ethanol fuel causes weird problems to older hoses so eliminate them first.

Before you start spending big bucks
Try some Seafoam, may be you're carb has gummed up a bit and restricts the High speed jet. It's around $10 a can at CDN tire or NAPA. Add to fuel and see if it clears up. I always add a bit to my boat gas, never had issues since.

Could be crap in the carb too, not letting the main jets get full fuel. That one got me in BC

Yep I suspect main jet gummed up. Get a can of carb cleaner, Remove carb bowl spray cleaner up through main jet. You should see a spray looking in the carb with choke open. No spray take a small strand of wire and push up main jet and spray again, until you see the spray coming up into the carb throat. I have fixed a few with this method. Good luck. Phil

I'll bet it's the carb. 100%. Easy fix. Did mine from watching a YouTube step by step.

This was happening to my older honda at one point also and there is actually a jet on the carb that you can remove from the outside of the carb. I removed it, cleaned it up and re-installed and it runs great. But as mentioned above, seafoam may do the trick also.

Seafoam is wonderful stuff. Also stabilizes the fuel. May take a few tanks to clean it right up though.
