Headed to a saskatchewan stocked lake yesterday. Saw a couple dozen fish down the hole and lost around a dozen. They would repeatedly bite or hit the hook but refused to hook it. I lost around five fish at the top of the hole but managed to land 1 female and 1 male splake. Some guys i talked to right when i got on the lake had a 7 lb 10 oz rainbow. There was only 4 inches of ice on this lake but it was good quality and clear. The nice coloured male splake was 18 inches.
I looked at the stomach contents and it would appear that there is some natural reproduction occurring of the hybrid trout and or possibly the rainbow trout. There were several clear eggs and milky eggs in their stomachs. I may be wrong but I had watched a few trout hatchery videos and in one of them they had mentioned how the milky eggs were either dead or unsuccessfully fertilized. I was also surprised to see how varied their diet was. After i watched the guys gut the big rainbow i pressed on its stomach and found it was almost entirely filled with snails.
If you can't tell from the photo they were eating sticklebacks, dragonfly larvae, leeches, eggs and water boatman.
