Default 6.5x300rum?

See that there is a 6.5x300wby but never heard of a 6.5x300 rum. Would this be a feasible chambering?

Default Too much

I think you would be sending wasted energy and down range would show no benefit. It would be hard to stabilize the long projectile to benefit from this case.
26 Nossler rings a bell as well, similar problems are encountered.

Hmmm. Would a longer pipe help?

The 7mmRUM gains very little over the 7mmstw, the RUM case is just too large to provide much benefit with a 7mm bullet, let alone a 6.5mm bullet. About all that you will gain is more recoil and increased throat erosion.

Just thinking of things to do with 300 rum that I dislike so much. Maybe I'll just give it to my one of my boys. Told myself a while ago that I'd never have another 300 mag. Wanted to stay true to my word. Lol.

Easy way to get into a 338. Buy a barrel and build a Edge.

Default 300 rum

It would be so inefficient, and hard on the barrel life .it wouldn’t be worth the time or effort to put together.

Got a 338 rum but yes that is a idea since out of the 338's I don't have a edge. Thought it might be a good idea to neck it down. Maybe get some speed out of it. Lol. I'll pass it on to one of the kids more than likely. They like the big hp and the noise and sore shoulder that comes with it. Lol

Its a new barrel away from being a 28 nosler. Have it throated longer than saami specs to seat the bullets out a bit and have about the biggest case thats usable in a 7mm.

Default Nope

Can’t use your RUM brass, but you could sell it to fund your 28 Nossler brass.

Sometimes you just have to admit dumb decisions and cut your losses.

You can form 28 from 300rum, but its a pain in the butt. Its a fair amount of work just forming it down- pushing the shoulder that far back on a steep shouldered case isn't that easy without forming dies. Then you would have to neck turn as well. I got a 33 nosler before the brass or loaded ammo was available, formed enough from 26 and some bertram 338 edge brass to get me shooting.

Don't know if I missed it, but what is the intended use of the rifle? If a long range rig you could always keep it a 300 RUM and rebarrel with a fast twist for the new berger 245 gr. Since you got all that brass I think this is what I would do. Not sure why you say you never want another 300 Win Mag. Again get a 9 twist barrel and shoot the 215 Berger. Hard to find a better combo than this anywhere.

I have a 7 RUM. Reaches out a long ways but there is really far more case capacity than needed in 7 mm, would be even worse with smaller caliber bullets. Elk11 is right, the STW is about the max effective case size in 7 MM.

Rum is made on the 404 Jeffry case. Fun thing would be to re-barrel it to 404 and take it to Africa, or use it shooting bear and moose. It is basically a slightly hooped up 45-70 but with pointed projectiles, quite a lot better long range performance. A relatively light kicking gun that will shoot 300 to 450 grain projectiles very accurately, and it has cool factor. Oldgutpile was just talking about building a bolt 404 last week.

Yes this is a option as well. 404 does sound intriguing.

I’ve had quite a few of the 30 cal mags (300 winmag,300 wby, 308 Norma and 300 rum) and find every one of them ignorant lol.

Ignorant as in not pleasurable to shoot. Maybe it's the gun but I haven't found one I like.

Well if you find the 300 RUM ignorant you would really be offended by the 7 RUM. Until I put a Pachmeyer pad, mercury decelerator and removable brake for load development on it, it was the most viscous kicking gun I have ever shot. The only other gun I own with a Brake is a 460 Weatherby. That RUM was far worse in terms of sharp and heavy recoil than any 300 Mag, 375 Mag or 416 I have ever shot. I own and have shot a lot of big boomers but I would have sold the 7 RUM if it hadn't been for the mods. It is accurate as all get out though, and will shoot three shot groups under a 1/2" at 200 yards and just under an 1 inch at 400.

I see. I personally like muzzle brakes. My 300 Win Mag is a full custom, Borden action, Brux, Mcmillan Game Scout, Holland brake, jewel etc. Finished at 10 lb 2 oz. With the custom reamer I used to shoot the 215's my load is right at 3000 fps. Drops confirmed out to 910 yds. I could shoot this set up all day long, as it is a pleasure to shoot. Buy yourself some SOUND GEAR electronic noise canceling ear plugs and put a brake on these "Ignorant" rifles you got.

Hornady introduced a new cartridge, the 6.5 PRC (precision rifle cartridge) late last year. the ballistics are 2900 fps with the 147 gr ELD bullet. the engineers at Hornady came up with a cartridge that is balanced, like the venerable 308 Win. the 6.5 PRC gets good velocity for the amount of powder burned and will produce excellent accuracy with more than one type of propellant.

I don’t know what it is with those 30 cal mags? Shoot a 338 quite comfortably. I figure other the a brake I’ll be letting one of my sons take ownership. The like these types of things. Lol

To me it is the relatively sharper pulse. The smaller the caliber, with the same amount of powder, the MORE like a punch the recoil feels in my opinion. As caliber increase and pie * r squared takes effect the recoil becomes more push like, even if there is more of it. I loved my 7 Rem Mags. With about 66 grains of powder and 3100 fps and a 162 grain bullet. I found it kicked less than the 300 mag by quite a bit, in identical guns and I even preferred it to the 30-06. The 7 RUM used 95 grains of powder to deliver 3400 fps. You will really notice the difference. Same thing going 300 to 338 or 375. Heavier bullet but then the guns tend to be getting heavier too and with the larger bore the recoil feels more shove like.

I don't mind using the brake at the range but I would NEVER use it, except on the 460 (no brake and full throttle loads have been know to cause detached retinas and or concussions) for hunting. The danger to the hearing of others nearby is just too great.
