Default barbed hooks not illegal

A friend of mine is doing maintanence at a F&W office he showed me a picture of a memo stating that since september 2011 barbed hooks have not been legal in Alberta however no one passed the info onto enforcement as a result over 2000 persons were wrongly charged and convicted of using barbed hooks. Now they are trying to figure out how to deal with it before telling the public. I would post the picture of the document that he showed me but he wouldnt send it to me.

I am not doubting the authenticity of your information....just questioning the method of collection is all...

Carry on....nothing to see here

S.S.S.U is what I hope they do!

because a couple t's didn't get crossed in a gov't office doesn't make me think these people weren't illegally fishing with barbs, when it was made clear in the regs that it was wrong to do so. and they chose not to comply.... Not because they had inside info....

sept 2011? I thought it has been longer than that that AB has been barbless?

It's about time.

There is no scientific evidence to support the legislation anyhow.

i'm not a lawyer but this does not make sence to me. if the gov't passes a law and everyone is told about it (in the regs.) but doesen't tell enforcement then instead of worrying about the 2000 caught they should be worried about the other 2000 that weren't charged because enforcement didn't know about it.
i call troll alert.

Funny how rummors get started and then in a day or two how they grow out of control.

Default Hurrah!!!

Good news. I recently saw a memo on someone's desk that stated clearly that the province can not legally collect income tax. I took a photo with my double aught spycam but I am unable to share due to the confidentiality of my bug sweeper's job.

What are you going to do with your 10%. Hint: spend it on Xmas (seeing as how it is also illegal to call it Christ's birthday) presents for people who pretend to like you.

p.s. tell the taxman you heard it here.

I've been out ice fishing the last few weekends and have been checked twice by FW for my license and I asked them if they wanted to check my hooks for barbs and they both said no that it is not longer enforceable. I asked what happened and they both said a mess up in the government. I know I will still use barbless as a heck of a lot easier to get out of a fish when it is C&R and also out of my fingers

There is a post for "Ask F&W" at the top of the page and I am sending them a question:
"Can I use barbed hooks in Alberta?" - should be a "YES/NO" type of an answer

Well if, as you say, they have NOT been legal, what's the issue?

Seriously, I think your story is as confused as your typing. Pretty sure any move to make barbed hooks legal would have involved the AFGA and other stakeholders. Pretty sure the Minister didn't just issue a directive and the Deputy minister forgot to send it out. I suspect legislation would probably have to be altered as well to make it legal, and that would hardly go unnoticed.

No, your friend is confused as to what he saw, or he's pulling one over on you, or you're trying to pull one over on us.

After reading this entire thread I'm still left wondering, will I be charged in Alberta for using barbed hooks? I'll call my friend who is a fish and wildlife officer and find out I guess.

Regardless of what the legislation is, I'll be using barbless hooks for ease of hook removal.

Right now, no...however as soon as the wording gets straightened out the law will come back, and likely with no announcement, leaving anybody using barbs in a sticky spot.

Best (and easier/safer) to just keep fishing barbless because we know it's coming back.
