Default Ghillie suit for hunting - stealthy or stupid?

Any of you ever tried to hunt draped in a Ghillie-suit? The camo-concept seems logical, but, ....maneuverability?

I have never used one. What are you thinking of hunting?

You get snagged on every stick and piece of brush. Pretty soon you're dragging half the woods with you. Trust me.

In my experience it doesn't really matter what you where as long as you stay still. Ghille or no ghille, if something sees you move then its pretty much game over

I have worn one for goose hunting, and I think they would work well for coyote hunting (stand) as well. Never used them for big game, like mentioned before I think they would snag to much for that, at least the string style would.

I have been less than 10 feet on deer in blaze orange on multiple occasions.U can fool there eyes but there noses they trust 100 per cent of the time.Wind in your face low and slow equals success.

Neither stealthy nor stupid. Just funny.

Also increases your chance of being misidentified as Bigfoot and being shot.

i have used one for photography and the occasional spot and stalk for Mule deer on the prairies.
It worked well when I had little to no ground cover, otherwise any decent camo outfit would work.
Downside: In a wooded area you catch everything, and forget about easy access through barbed wire fences.
I know a bowhunter that used one for decades and swore by it.. It is just another personal choice..

I agree on all accounts , I got one for Christmas and it catches everything , but in no cover situations I had great success on coyotes . Crossing a barb wire fence is indeed a chore .

You won't get scoped.......unless they see you struggling to get untangled from the brush. Animals smell you, hunters see you move...who you hiding from? Break up your silhouette and see what you think.

Default Great feedback

Interesting comments here, from one end of the opinion-spectrum to the other.

I can imagine how a Ghillie suit might become a 'drag-net' in thicker bush; hadn't thought of that, thanks!

Also, the thought of being mistaken for some sort of 'creature' and getting shot at is also a serious consideration. I do hunt where other hunters abound!

Nevertheless, it is great to see some feedback here. Advertising videos of Ghillie suits portray them to be the best thing since sliced bread (I even saw one advertisement where an image is shown of a bow-hunter in full draw with a full Ghillie on)... I can't imagine that, but, each to his own I suppose. I'd hate to be untangling myself from the cams and from the bowstring after the missed shot!

I use a ghillie all the time. The one I use does not collect brush, is light weight and very user friendly. If it wasn't then I wouldn't use it.

C'mon Red, how much does concealment really count? You are using a white rifle with no snow around. LOL

Nice to finally see a picture of you though! Is that "yes dear" in the glasses? LOL (Maybe Bodo is a pretty liberal/accpting place)

Ghillie suits work in the right situations, no doubt about it.

Hey Okietoker.

The ghillie obviously works. You saw the pics and were fooled into thinking.

I was in the pics.

You missed the snow over the hill in the background.

You have managed to waken Satan's sister with your "shot from the lip". with Bodo and 'liberal' 'cheek by jowl ' in the same sentence.

All this accomplished because of the ghillie suit.

It's what you don't see that will bite you in the grass.

Here's a pic of me in Arizona with a shoot and release coyote.

it should be called a snaggie.
some noteable side activities while using one may include fence crossing yoga fiascos, *****ly pears cactus relocation services, old wet burlap cover scent truck deodorizer, early season mosquito protection hoody and the ever popular...look at that idiot! from friends and spectators alike.
also makes a great gift for the wife, (just make sure it large enough for your hunting buddy)
actually it is the best and only true camo available, the rest are 'designer' products. have used/seen it work on some of the biggest wild deer ever filmed.

haha hilarious catch and realease coyote, might have to steal that line,Red.

i use mine really only to hunt crows at the farm

aside from that i got a roughneck once to dress up in mine and posistioned him near my rig tank , laid a naughty magazine next to him in the grass ,called the tool push that was soon getting deployed to afghanastan over claiming my valves were messed up and feigned amazement of what was that. he yelled " hey porn " and ran over and thats when willy ambushed him . OMG ,he jumped and got into a one legged defensive posistion. i nearly fell over laughing to death.morel of the story i told him ,dont go near something that shouldnt be there when he is over there.

another time a different push told me to bring my suit, circulating the well he ran the pump as i stalked the consultant, but he went onto the rig tank so i couldnt pursue, i was turning to hide my boots a little and he seen me move and screamed "what the heck is that" ?,when i stood up i yelled to be silly. he thought it was pretty cool and always wanted to see one.

so yeah ive mainly used mine for goofing off, worth it though.

Not to be disagreeable or anything...but with regard to the 'white rifle with no snow' comment...I am not sure of my ground on this but the way I understand it is that animals, unlike humans, only see in black and white and do not differentiate colours. If true, that might explain Red's success.

The ghillie seems to be a favourite of the turkey hunters down in the states when they are trying to call them in.

By the time wiley sess the white rifle and begins to whine about it, I simply shoot him. end of discussion. Sometimes I use vet rap over the white or white over the tan paint.

Because of the design of my suit I pick up very little"bush duff" and debris. It doesn't drag on the ground.
It also has no burlap or jute to get wet and stink. If I get blood on it, no biggie, I tell my staff to wash it. in that white thing in the laundry room.

It is light weight and very user friendly. I put it on in the a.m. and drive from stand to stand all day while coyote hunting. I only take it off at the end f the day.

It is like a 3/4 length Mesh parka with camo cotton strips sewn on. The mesh allows it to breath in the warm days of early season or south in the desert.

I wear it over a t shirt in early season adn over my Carhart parka in the late season. Full lenghth zipper makes it easy on and off. Attached hood and detachable face mask included.

I've done a ton of coyote calling over the years and from my field results I seldom hunt without one. I've had coyotes approach to arm's length from downwind side, and I've seen a magpie land on my buddy's boot while calling coyotes.

It doesn't make you invisible, but it tells their little brain "nothing to see here, move along"

I've used it in the field amongst decoys with deadly results for the ducks and geese.

Partner and I sat in a barley stubble while nearly 50 whit tailes grazed around us for an hour and half. Some as close as 6 feet.

I'm too lazy not to use it.
