Why are they going through peoples homes?

So did they go in to every house? Or just look up the names of pal holders and start busting doors? This should be interesting

X2! Is this even legal for them to do? I guess the owners should have taken their firearms with them when they got evacuated although I'm sure the RCMP would be up in arms about that if they had.

Topham said the confiscated firearms have been inventoried and are secured at an RCMP detachment. He was not at liberty to say how many firearms had been confiscated.
“We have seized a large quantity of firearms simply because they were left by residents in their places,” said Topham.
The guns will be returned to owners after residents are allowed back in town and they provide proof of ownership, Topham added.

Uh oh... So, are these folks supposed to provide a retail receipt or a registration from say, a defunct firearm registry?
I would hope what that means is that they can show up with proof of where they live and get their personal property back, but I'm assuming this will mean that if they don't show up with a RPAL or PAL, they won't be.
They should have left it well enough alone. This situation reminds me a lot of what happened in Slave Lake after the fire.

I sure hope the owners of these firearms have an inventory with photos in a safe dry place.
How else are you going to prove ownership?
This is going to go sideways in a hurry!
Seize them when they know damned well most people's proof of ownership if any is likely destroyed by the same flood that caused the illegal seizure by the cops!
Hello class action law suit!

proof of ownership should be unnecessary. The police know exactly where the firearms came from. After all, they stole them.
Wonder if they used old registry records to locate the guns, or did they search every home in town for them?
There better not be any unsafe storage charges coming out of this....
Write Ted Menzies, the area MP and ask him what the heck is going on and who is running the rcmp.

Given that most of them were already locked up they cops had to cut into lockers and vaults. More destruction of personal property.
A real knee jerk jack booted response for sure.
Funny how everytime one of us leaves our residence we don't take all our guns with us so using the logic of that statement the cops are right out to lunch.
If they have the town as secure as they think they do then no one should be walking around stealing stuff.

That's the rcmp for ya. They seem to think think nobody should have guns except them. They don't come out and say it, but you can tell by their attitude toward gun owners.
Just sayin.

The RCMP were probably in the houses to accompany the guys shutting of gas and power.
Reminds me of a story....One year the home alarm went off at my parents house while they were out of town. The neighbour had a key and let the police into their house to check that everything was ok. They noticed that the gun cabinet had glass doors (which was locked) but that in their opinion because of the glass doors the guns werent secure. The city cops simply asked my Dad to secure them with a cable (or some other means) and they might come back to take a look if all was good. No confiscating required....

Should be a master valve somewhere so going into each and every house would not be necessary. Power same thing.

This whole thing in High River has been a fiasco. First, not letting residents in to recover and secure whatever they can. Now, forced entry into homes to confiscate firearms. Sounds like a police state to me.

Here's a question for ya...
Hypothetically, I have been given a mandatory evacuation order and I take my restricted firearm so that it won't be left in an abandoned house. Assuming it is in locked box and my travel trailer has a locking closet I can keep it in, how many laws have I broken? My ATT wouldn't cover taking it to a campground. Are the RCMP going to come looking for me after they break into my house and discover it is not there?

Wow, part of me is so glad this happened, all hell is going to break loose over this. I hope the RCMP get stepped on for going above and beyond their rights.
This part of the article grabbed my attention...

He did confirm that officers relied on forced entry to get into numerous houses during the early stages of the flood because of an “urgent need”, said Topham.

There is a lot of talk over on CGN about it. Apparently the army had lent the RCMP breaching tools but when they discovered what was going on the army made sure the RCMP couldn't use them anymore. The RCMP also had locksmiths with them but they apparently didn't use them just kicked in or sledgehammered doors open. This is coming from military personnel.
A lot of these firearms were out of the safes as homeowners took them out of basement safes and put them in top floor closets to protect them from the flood.

Break and enter to steal guns ???? WOW...are we ever protected !!
...makes a guy wonder how many of the "saved " guns will go missing ??
or, how many will wind up in the streets ??
Once the house was breached, will they keep a cop on the doorstep to prevent other breaches ????
This was a EFFED UP decision by the Royal Canadian Mounted Gestapo !!
