Default Aluminum fishing boat motor

Hello all. Looking into purchasing a motor for our aluminum fishing boat. Have seen a 4 stroke 9.9 mercury on the water and it seemed underpowered on a similar size (12 foot) boat. I was thinking 15 HP.

1. On a motor up to 10 years old, what does a guy need to took for in particular? Any brands to stay away from because of known issues?

2. For brand new, are there any that stand out as being better?

Thank you and I look forward to your advice.

I’m a fan of Yamaha outboards for new (last 10 years). Have a 20 year old Johnson 9.9 (Suzuki really) 4 stroke on my 14’ aluminum now and with just me in it, I rarely have it at full throttle. For aluminum 12 – 14’ I think the 9.9 is all you need and no registration required.

Thank you for the reply. Yamahas seem to be hard to beat.

I will tell you right now, max your rated capacity out! I have had several 12' and 14' tinners. 7.5, 9.9, 15 hp. That 7.5 made me walk though the swamp in a wicked storm. It couldn't even keep up with the waves. Got to shore at least, and had to walk it.

Just like when buying a vehicle, allways get the bigger motor.

It's better to have the power and not need it then to need it and not have it.

I had a 15Hp on my 14' and when I was in the NSR with a few friends going up stream we were barely going anywhere but on a lake with a few of us it was just ok.

You can get a 9.9 and run it maxed out often or get a 15 and go easy on the motor and allways have enough power on hand. Registration is cheap and easy.

Imagine being far from shore on a lake like Calling or Cold when the weather turns like it loves to do, you will be glad you didn't cheap out on an underpowered kicker.

X2 on the 15hp I ran a 9.9 for a long time bought a new 15hp Yamaha and what a difference. The 9.9 does the job but, as said above once the waves pick up or you put an extra person in the boat it’s underpowered. Registration is free from transport Canada and can be done online. The boat stickers are shipped for $20 from canadaboatdecals.ca they are out of vegreville.

Also, if you go with a newer Yamaha there is a charging kit direct bolt on and 2 wires to plug in that will give you constant 12vdc I use it to charge my trolling motor battery. Was fishing for 7 days and didn’t have to take it out to charge once.

I would check the plate on your boat for HP limitations, some of those older, smaller 12ft boats are not rated for a 15 hp motor.

My 15hp Evinrude on my 14' Lund tinner will get me to 43km/hr (gps) with one passenger. Actually surprised how fast it goes when on plane. Throw one or two more people in, and you will need that extra power, because it turns into a water plow.

Thank you everyone. Definitely great points by everyone. I appreciate it. Back 20 years ago when I last used the boat regularly it had a 7.5 on it.
There is no way I will be buying a 7.5. 👍

You must note that any boat with motor over 10HP must be registered with boat number on it. I am not sure if rules changed but that is why there were so many 9.9HP motors manufactured to stay below the registration limit.

How heavy are the 15hp Yamahas? Those of you that run them, do you leave the motor on the boat, or take it off? I like having the ability to pull my 9.9 off when not using it.

Where would you recommend buying a Yamaha 15?....in Edmonton.

I had a older Johnson 9.9 on a 14footer. GPS 19km/he me and all my fishing gear in it.
16.5ish with another passenger.
Find a 15hp, then find a decal kit for a 9.9.

Ebay sells decal kits. Older 9.9 and 15 had very minor differences to de-tune it I believe, but basically the same motors in essence. The difference between a 9.9 and a 15 is HUGE in my experience. A 9.9 will get you on plane with a light load, kind of, still pushing water though. My 15 leaves almost no boat in the water, just the motor and my fish finder. It's actually quite impressive for only being 15hp.

In many manufacturers the 9.9, 15 and, in some cases, the 20 hp weigh the same. So get as much motor as you can and be happy you did.

In 2001 I bought new a 15hp Mercury from Barry J’s ....paid $2K.... put less than a tank of fuel through it ... kids commandeer’d my boat ...lake started to dry up so launching was a pain...so it has sat on a stand in my garage for 18 years. I pull the rope twice a year to make sure it stays limber ...anybody have an idea of resale?

My 14’ tinner with an older 7.5 Evinrude was doing 12 km/h with three of us and our fishing gear tonight.

Not exactly speedy. Lol.

It won’t get up and plane, just throws a huge wake and plows along.

2 stroke? I'd say around $1000. General rule I've learned over the years of many boats, is about $100 per HP. With it being almost 20yrs old, it's going to go down a bit from that, but boat motors actually do not see much depreciation with age, is my experience.

They are the same as a Merc , except black in colour.
They are all pretty close nowadays.
Maybe a Honda is in the cards for the 12 footer.
The 9.9/15 hp is in the exhaust and a carb jet for differences.
Been awhile since I researched it, but that was what we found back then.
