Default Tying your own bucktails

I know many of us are both hunters and fishermen, so I thought I would share. I skinned out the tail of my last whitetail deer and put it in a small Rubbermaid container with borax sprinkled all over it to help preserve. I had intentions of using it for tying flies this past spring but never got around to it.

I finally dig it out this past weekend and opened up the box. The tail was well preserved and the hair was in excellent shape. I got out my fly vice and some jig heads I use ice fishing and proceeded to tie up a few of the following.

You can obviously make them as bulky as you like. In this case I added a couple strands of flash and kept it pretty slim as I usually add a minnow head.

Since it is hunting season I thought I would encourage a few here to keep your tails for tying jigs and flies if you aren’t already doing so.
