Default Neat looking walleye (ok I guess it is a sauger)

Caught this little guy today, by far the smallest one of the day (caught 22 between me and a buddy) so I'm not sure if the coloring is a bit different cuz of being a younger fish. Wish my buddy got a better pic, there was some light "camo" pattering on it which made me think possibly got some sauger in it.......that being said, is it common for younger walleye to look like this?

I am pretty sure that is either a sauger or maybe a saugeye. Looks more like a suager to me though.

Cool looking fish either way.

if it is a sauger why is the pattern so light? The only other sauger I have seen pulled from the river in person was MUCH darker

Could be because the river is muddy , they will lighted up in the muddy waters . Just like a walleye does

Everyone knows its "common sense" to research the body of water you'll be fishing and be able to identify the species that inhabit said waters!!!!

atleast i knew the options, i never asked "what is this, i have no idea"

And my biggest problem is listening to people that dont know what they are talking about and take their word for it.

I see someone dug this thread up so I thought it would be a good time to ask. I caught a few sauger now but what's a good size one? All the ones I caught were small. And I see there is no size limit in the regs.

I have only caught one and it was small(14 in) a decent one would be 18+ in and low 20s would be a pretty nice sauger. Alberta record is only 6 lbs.

Thanks! I caught some real small ones about 7" and caught a 15" one and that's when I realized they weren't walleye.

I see someone dug this thread up??? You dug it up. Lol. Unless the guy who dug it up was deleted.

To your question. I have rarely caught them bigger than 16". I will admit to not catching hundreds of them though.

A cool fish by any means for sure.
