Default Confirming Electrical Discharge Condition of Aluminum Boat

Have a welded aluminium that mainly gets fished in fresh and will get some ocean time next year. Boat is new to me and I am looking for info on confirming how much electrical discharge is occurring from the boat and then how to adjust, add sacrificial anodes etc. to reach a discharge that is considered acceptable for fresh and saltwater fishing Are there any shops in Calgary who could help with this (check discharge, supply equipment, install equipment etc.)?

Thanks

Just don't ground to your boat. Run grounds to your battery ground.

If you search the net you can find info on how to check your boat on your own. there was a thread about this sort of thing earlier this summer on this site.Stray electrical current can not only contribute to corrosion , it can really affect your fishing success if you use wire on your downriggers.

Default Sacrificial anodes

Sailboats and ocean going liners/freighters have anodes welded to the steel hulls to slow corrosion. Typically, these are meant for vessels that are in the water constantly. A small craft is mostly in dry dock.

Also used in the pipeline industry where dis-similar metals are in proximity to each other and buried.

There is an anode on your outboard engine to protect the iron bits. You should have nothing to worry about if you hose your craft down with fresh water after use in the salt chuck. Include the water jackets and impeller housing. Similarly you want to rinse your reels and rods before stowing. Keeping your bilge dry might prolong the life of your hull.

I think that ceilidh69 is overthinking this problem.

I used to work with a guy in this field. Roy Brander wrote a paper or an article or something relating to this subject of retro-fitting anodes on sailing vessels. See if you can track him down on LinkedIn and ask an expert.
