Default Trapping question

Hi all...I am curious...we were out bird hunting west of Calgary and, on a well used trail we have hunted before, we came across a large wire snare tied to a tree..the snare was about the size of an ice cream pail lid..the path had been blocked by some dead fall to force the animal towards the snare.....My question is what type of animal is this snare used for? thanks..again just curious...I was surprised to come across it...

thanks for the serious answer. I am ignorant of the art of the trapper..so this is a neck noose typically for coyote or wolf? I thought they might be baited into this type of trap..

Bait works, too, but they work well on game trails, too. There must have been some type of lock/washer on it ......??

Similar to this....the trail is on the way to a bait pile.
