Well, our little #6 Sheltie sure outshines the next door neighbour's #92 ranked Beagles. Perfect pooch for this family, and the kids love her. The only downside would be the lack of 'asertiveness'. (Mostly, she can be suprisingly savage when need be, which is nice.) When they describe the breed as, "Eager to please", they ain't kidding!

If you're looking for a good family mutt and have young kids, I highly recommend the Shetland Sheepdog.

Abbey Girl comes in at number 7, but she is cute as hell. Jet gave her bad ideas though!

Mine come in at 1&3,I think they determine a dogs intelligence by how many commands it can learn.

#1 really stands out to me. Afgans are notorious for being a difficult breed, mostly because humans have been selectively breeding them with a more refined head, leaving less room for brains. Some of the smartest dogs, I've seen, were Mutts.

I am at both end of the scale 5, 98 or 87 as I can tell what the difference might be.

Default Devastated

At first I was devastated to find that my breed was only one step ahead of an Irish Setter and well behind the Brittany. Then my wife pointed out that she had a list by some scientist that said GSP's were actually #17 ahead of brittany's (19) and led the pointing dog brigade. So now I can rest easy knowing that all is right in the world.
The top 10 and bottom 5 are the same on this list as well. It just gets hazy in between.

My dog is #79 on the list. I don't buy it. He's dumber than that.

#16 for me. Smartest dog I've ever had though but I started training very early. I don't think I will ever own any other kind of dog than an Aussie. I love them.

Cool Aussie

#1 - our border collie's wierd, they're extremely busy. it's not her fault though we "inherited" her from an older couple when she was 4 that kept her penned up quite a bit. Come around a lot in the last 2 years, but a long way to go, a victim of her environment......

#16 - I like our Aussie a bunch, she trys hard, good with kids and you can turn her off if you have to. we've had her since she was 8 weeks so anything she doesn't know is my fault

i just said goodbye to my border collie (at 15 years old) a few weeks back. smartest dog i ever knew. i have recently adopted a chocolate lab-redbone coonhound cross. i guess #7 and #67 averages to #37? so far he doesnt strike me as super smart, but he's a great pet. besides, i didnt take him in to do my taxes...but i do hope he works out as a bird dog.
