I could be wrong but I believe it’s been closed since the end of November. I’m going for a bull January 7-10. Hopefully the break in hunting will be a good thing. I’ve been the last two years and we have come home with cows both times. Hopefully get into the NWA again and pull one out.
Best of luck and safe hunts to anyone going.

I thought the same as you a couple years ago and hunted after the 6-7 week break. All the big bulls were in the nwa. Hope you find a monster!

Figured I would post this here and not start another thread, I am headed to Suffield Jan 21 for the cull, I have anterless draw, any members on the site headed there for the cull PM me and I will give contact info, I have a BIG winch on the front of my truck that I don't mind helping a fellow out if you get stuck, save you from calling a tow truck, I also would be willing to share info where I am seeing elk, if any, not my first trip to Suffield. Good luck

there was pretty much zero snow on the base for the first hunt of january
you could drive where ever you wanted on or off road on the main part of the base
if you plan on hunting the nwa game carts would be your best bet vs a sled

Thanks for the info, snow up here so I figured there was snow down there, that makes for easier driving

You can only drive the main area if you are retrieving game. Not to look for game

I think he meant the roads are in good shape.

I’m heading there on the 21st as well with the BOL. We have 4 tags between us to fill lol.

I’m bringing a game cart from Hilgy that turns into a sled if need be. Traffic cams show a bit of snow on the ground.

I’ll send you a PM jkbloom so we can work together by sharing info to get some meat in the freezers.

True but You are able to drive on the 2 track trails that the oilfield uses to check wells which can take you out to some great vantage points on the high hills to be able to glass massive areas

Was out last year for the last hunt, seen a large heard about 2000 yards from the road. to far to shot and the second you start walking off goes the heard because its so flat out there there is no where to hide.

Walked 10k in the NWA in the far NE corner and saw about 100 mulies including a couple 180+” bucks, around 30-40 whitetails and a couple hundred antelope. Not one elk spotted all day and I drove the main base in the afternoon.

I did manage to fill one of my cow (Anterless) elk tags, on the main part of the base, when I checked out about 5:45pm last night only 4 elk were taken yesterday in total, man those elk can hide with only grass around them, I headed home last night to process the elk and will head back there today, the guys from AO I have been talking to I will PM you guys if I see anymore elk. Good luck AO gentlemen and woman.

Filled my 2 cow tags in the NWA on Monday. Pushed around about 100 in the NWA on Tuesday trying to get a bull. No luck yet. We will be back out tomorrow.
Toboggan worked good and is not subject to breakdowns.

Got hasseled a bit at the S24 gate going in with my Stag 10.

The MP saw my ATT and registration certificate for my AR15 and then he asked to look at our gun cases. Well when he opened up the Stag he thought it was the AR15 and I had to pull off to the side and show him the FRT for it and such.

After that we saw a herd in the main base but when we drove around to get to the road that was closer, they were gone.

We got up in the NWA and started walking. About 3km from the truck we saw a lone cow, so we put a stalk on it and when we got about 200yds from it a pickup game down a trail and spooked her off.....

Later in the afternoon we spotted a lone cow in the NWA from the road so we got out and hiked but couldn’t get a shot.

We have been everywhere on the main base and today did extensive part of the south NWA without seeing as much as one elk. We walked a good portion along the edge of the coulies but only saw old sign. If anyone has suggestions send me a pm , I think we can do with some help at this point.

Thanks

I think your only luck this late in the hunt will be to get in the North NWA get off Mule deer middle ways up and hike east towards the river. Good luck can’t wait to go back one day.

We finished tagging out today. 2 cows 1 bull. My advice would be to go NWA north, go to the end of Mounted Rifle and walk a 2 km circle all the way around that lease. That should yeld something. Stay low and peak over the hills, never crest them. The rest is hunter common sense. Good luck!

Anyone get a look at the final kill numbers for this week? Anyone try that circle around the end of Mounted Rifle? If so, how did it go?

I was at the last hunt, was well run and organized, most people are not willing to go after the herd as they were usually a few kms walk off the beaten path and walk in only. Ive been twice now and it was not a”gong”show either time.

Was on the second season ever hunt a few year back before you could walk the NWA. It was literally a race to a herd of 800 plus elk ... people chasing with trucks , bullets flying everywhere... it was real western .. I wish we could have hiked the nwa then. Seen a few giants 800 yards in just bedded
