Broke a tooth on Steel shot.... anyone else?
Last weeks wild pheasant.
No apparent damage to the breast-chest area.
So.. into the roaster with some brined duck breasts.. Cajun spice and mushrooms.
Chomp chomp CRACK!
Piece of my righ back molar cops off!
Dang it! Hasent happened to me for decades.
Anyone else?

Yup, not fun.
I bought a little metal detector from Lee Valley.
They are for finding nails before you cut a board.
Works on bird breasts.

Would definitely be worth it for what it costs to see the dentist

Ah man. Yup. I’ve got a lovely crown on a molar from a pellet in some goose jerky. No joy.

beesiedog, that truly sucks. I am very protective of my teeth, I want a full set for life. One of the main reasons I stopped hunting waterfowl was the fear of breaking teeth on steel pellets. If that metal detector from Lee Valley works 100% that might change my mind.
Battle Rat - Has it ever failed to pick up a pellet in the meat anywhere. Thanks

Was out with a friend a few years back, who had just made some jerky and brought it along. Told me how he'd gone thru it with a magnet, etc., I'm sure he really was pretty thorough about it. His first bite---he hollered. Apparently he has upgraded to rare earth magnets that will pickup the whole breast if there is a pellet in there. We were discussing it again this year as he'd pulled out some jerky, and I mentioned to him that it made me giggle a bit everytime I saw homemade jerky since then. It always reminds me of that day.

I just avoid the risk totally by getting someone else to chew my food for me.

Just about that time. I'm finally gonna fire up that VSSF 220 swift I bought a long time ago. My kid is gonna drop off a 'special scope I bought for it.
Coyotes beware!!

Sorry to hear that , but what number did you use?
Personally I am trying to use the bigger the better for exactly the same reason..
$ 4 lead for pheasants usually around 80% of birds I shot will go through, so not too many pellets should be remaining at the end...
and why steel for pheasants?

My mother in law seems to always find that one piece of shot we always miss even in thin sliced jerky.

A few years ago I bit down on a BB inside some goose sausage. Cost me $550 just to get it filled. At least I got lucky and didn't need the crown. Since then I picked up a Garret hand held metal detector and all my birds get checked now. On the high setting it will detect a single #7.5 pellet in gallon sized ice cream pail of meat.
