Default Seen 1 of These B 4 ?

My son spotted this little guy outside our trailer while camping in SE last week. From NS & have only ever seen tiny salamanders, but this guy was 12 inches long, with a huge head. I nearly fell over, looked like a cross between a burbot & frog~lol. Did some looking & supposedly live 16 years & rarely see the light of day. I could not find diet though. If anyone knows I'd like to. Not sure if he was attracted to goose gut pile, or bugs nearby.

Tiger sallies here are eating worms, grubs, larvae, and small fish primarily.

I have four 10" specimens that subsist on earthworms, crickets, and minnows.

Default Tiger Salamanders

Yes, I found 3 last month living under our scrap metal pile. They were relaxing in a small pool of water that had collected against our maintenance building foundation. Pretty neat little guys. I will have to check again now that the cooler nights are moving in to see where they go to hide.

Default Thanks

Great info. My son wanted to keep him, but after I dug out my wildlife identity book & read just how long they live & that he would need to hibernate, I had to tell him he would have to be set free. I certainly considered it, but we live in the city & felt he'd be better off & have a longer life right where he was.

I adopoted a tiger salamander that was ove 12" head to tail when I was younger. Was switching the substarte is the aquarium one day at the same time I was cleaning the turtle tank and so I out them both in the tub. He was as long as the turtles and seemed to be fine as I watched them for 15 min. When I came back 45 min later there was nothing left of the tiger but head and tail. I was a bit shocked and saddened because they are a unique salamander. I dont remember specifically if he ever hibernated. I would assume not as the temp in the house was usually aorund 20 degrees.
Probably a good idea though to let him back into the wild.

had three roaming the yard tuesday during our windup, kids were excited. you know its going to rain when they come crawling into the garage and head for the basement. don't use those stairs much, so i usually find a couple that dried up down there. we get them all summer long.

No, I haven't seen those before.

Not sure if they are around Red Deer or not.

Default Neat Little Guys.

It sure was cool to see. I thought it was interesting as he couldn't move very fast at all. Not designed 4 speed.
