My uncle got out ok (although with some harrowing moments) but came up with a clever way to check on the status of his house. He used the onstar from the car in his garage to check the diagnostic report. So far it appears good.

He figured even if it was gone, knowing one way or the other was better than the uncertainty.

You forget how many friends and family members work and live in Fort Mac until you are trying to keep in touch with them all in trying times.

This forum sure makes me proud of my fellow men and women though.

Good news among the disaster: Fort McMurray's water treatment plant was saved, the downtown core had been held at last report, and there is still no injury or death reported as a direct result of the fires.

Steve (SDVC)gave me a heck of a deal on a sweet little 16 gauge lightweight LC Smith 2 years ago. I called him last night and told him he's getting it back along with a shot shell loader, components and all the 16gauge shells I have. No strings attached. I'm going to scrounge up a good hunting knife for him too as I have way too many. I'm not rich, I'm not wealthy, but I have more than the ones who lost their homes.

As Cat mentioned, I would like to start up a sticky thread once this crisis is over. Anyone wishing to donate hunting and fishing items can list it, and folks who lost their homes can hopefully benefit from it. We can also look at raffling off a few items to the highest bidder to generate funds for the rebuild of these areas. Any other ideas you have along this line please PM me.

Quebec has sent out 4 water bombers, good for them! Its the only time I've ever heard of something coming this direction from them, but that's for another discussion. They've stepped up, enough said.

Yet last I heard they haven't officially asked us Saskatchewan for help. So I believe we took over fires that are near the border to free up your resources instead.

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) will continue with suppression efforts in and around Fort McMurray. Now that the fire has interfaced with the urban area, structural protection is a priority. Additional firefighting equipment including nine fire engines and Incident Management Teams are enroute, supplied by the Municipal Emergency Management Partners (MEMP). Additional staff for the Regional Emergency Operations Centre (REOC) has been sourced to provide relief for the current staff.

Agriculture and Forestry (AF) will continue to engage the fires from air and ground. Mutual Aid from the Municipal Emergency Management Partners (MEMP) has been deployed. Additional firefighting equipment and staff are enroute to the impacted area. AF predicts up to 400 firefighters will be engaging this fire over the next 24 to 48 hours. The Provincial Forest Fire Centre (PFFC) has activated to Operational Level 4 (Level 5 is the highest) and is sourcing additional staff and equipment from other jurisdictions. Four air tankers from Quebec are schedule to arrive onscene
5 May. Page 5 of 7

AEMA will remain engaged in the impacted communities through Field Officers and the POC will remain at Operational Level 4 until the situation stabilizes. POC staffing (including full operations staff and CMOs) has been established allowing for 24hour operations through to 9 May. The Major Event Support Apparatus (MESA) and chase truck have been deployed to Fort McMurray to support ongoing operations. A top priority is providing logistics support to all evacuees and plans are being developed to ensure the needs of all evacuees are met. Canada Task Force 2 (CANTF2) arrived onscene 4 May and is coordinating with ESS staff to provide support for evacuees and emergency responders.

Health and Human Services will continue to support local authorities with Reception Centre operations as required. Additional ESS staff is available through HS and is prepared to deploy where necessary.

A Salvation Army food truck is enroute to Fort McMurray to provide food for emergency responders.
Municipal Affairs has scheduled a media availability for 1100hrs 5 May.

The Request for Assistance to the Department of National Defence (DND) has been approved. DND has four rotary wing aircraft in Conklin to support ongoing provincial operations.

Key Messages

-Our priority is ensuring Albertans are safe. Our fire crews are working hard to reduce the threat of fire to people, homes and infrastructure.

-The Government of Alberta has enacted a Provincial State of Emergency, and continues to work with municipalities, organizations and businesses to support evacuated residents.

-The urban Fort McMurray area is under a mandatory evacuation order. In addition, the communities of Anzac, Gregoire Lake Estates, and Fort McMurray First Nation are also subject to a mandatory evacuation order. This impacts more than 80,000 residents.

-Residents in McKenzie County, near High Level, are also under a mandatory evacuation order due to a separate wildfire.

-Alberta Transportation and its local maintenance contractor staff are supplying fuel to the public along Highway 63 as needed and three fuel depots have been set up along the highway.

-RCMP continues to watch the fire closely, redirecting traffic as needed along Highway 63 as the fire moves across the region.

-Albertans that are affected by the wildfire should follow the instructions of emergency officials and stay tuned to their local media for information and updates.

-I encourage all Albertans to follow Alberta Emergency Alert online or download the smartphone app to stay informed on emergencies in their area.

-Alberta Health Services has issued an air quality advisory for the Fort McMurray area. People in the area are advised to take the appropriate precautions. Information is available at www.albertahealthservices.ca/wildfire.

Quebec has a pretty robust forest fire system. Not to mention Bombardier builds the CL215/415. They are known for lending out line crews and fire fighting.

Or they did 20 years ago when i was doing forestry anyway.

It has been said before but just an amazing response by people in Alberta to support the people forced from their homes and now seeing other resources being brought in to help this is terrific.
There will be lot's of heart break for those that lost their homes and possessions. Hopefully the support during the recovery phase will be seamless.

Fort McMurray Brothers and Sisters,

I hope you have all found your way to family and friends in the south. If anyone needs something don't hesitate to ask.
My family and I are safe at the i laws in Edmonton. I'm not gonna sugar coat it. It was the scariest day of my life. My wife in one vehicle with our two kids and our two young cousins, me in my work truck with another young cousin, grid lock in downtown as the fire swept down Abasand hill and closed of the south ecsape. We were essentially parked on Franklin ave. with no where to go due to traffic. Finally things crept along and when I got to the casino intersection the cop was allowing left turns or straight north. I said " is 63 south Re opened ?"
He said " yes get your family out now!"

We joined a convoy of residents on 63 south but was finally flowing . Cool heads behind the wheel and we managed to drive out at 60km/hr. Both sides of road was on fire going up beacon hill. Very poor visibility , tree top ashes falling to the road and spraying coals on the road like poking a camp stove. My wife was on my 6 and we were communicating through Bluetooth. She was very scared but we all got through safe. Very proud of her

We are all safe now.

Saw many scary video of the escape by others. I am pleased we haven't lost people. Buildings can be rebuilt. We pray for our emergency crews still

Also huge shout out to my Anzac friends. Gave us food water and gas to get us moving. Pray for them now as they have evacuated too.

Yeah, mostly true... but then there was that last election which would suggest it is not completely the case.

Default 85,000 Hectares

Supercharged by winds of up to 70 km/h, the Fort McMurray wildfire ballooned to 85,000 hectares overnight and is now raging across a wide front south of the city.

One major task on Thursday will be to evacuate up to 25,000 people now sheltering in oilsands work camps north of the city. The province hopes to transport many of those people, who fled Fort McMurray two days ago, by aircraft to Edmonton later today,

Near the airport, the Nova Hotel, an ATCO Gas building, a maintenance shop, and portions of the airport fire hall were destroyed by the flames, Transport Canada confirmed Thursday morning.

Strongly agree with this, but I think the same could be said of most northern towns. We are towns full of people that other people call when there is a problem, and we cope well in tough situations. When we have a problem ourselves its surprizing how well we can handle it as a community. I've seen some pretty huge FUBAR's completely delt with long before the authorities even show up.

I think that's almost the hardest part of the evacuation experience, obviously things have to be delt with before they can let people back into town, but to coop a bunch of able bodied people who attack problems head on for a living up in community centers for several weeks with nothing to do but wait is pretty tough on everyone. Its gonna take patience guys, best wishes, and hopefully the powers that be can streamline the process as much as possible.

I wish the Alberta government had their **** together like the residents of Fort McMurray, what an outstanding job the public did on the evacuation.

I solute all residents of that community and would like to say I will be lobbying to have another route out of town opened up, it should have been done 20yrs ago when the population went from 30,000 to 75,000 in a matter of a couple years.

Don't forget who is making the real money from the hard work of the people working there. It's time for them to buck up and make McMurray a safer place.

There's a whole lot that could have been done better, it's the past now but it better be a lesson for the future.

Somewhat agree, but that comment in the middle about left wing etc etc could put a damper on a lot of funds coming in from right there, eh?

Latest situation update:

Public safety remains the key priority as the wildfire in Fort McMurray continues to burn. Provincial fire crews continue their efforts to reduce the threat to property and infrastructure.

Current situation

A provincially declared state of emergency for the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is in effect.
Fire conditions remain extreme, with 18 new starts yesterday. A total of 49 wildfires are burning, with seven considered out of control, 12 being held, 23 under control, and seven turned over to the responsible parties.
Cooler temperatures of 16 C are predicted, but lower humidity and winds at 25 kilometres, gusting to 40 kilometres per hour, make weather a significant factor.
More than 1,110 firefighters, 145 helicopters, 138 pieces of heavy equipment and 22 air tankers are fighting the fires.
Mandatory evacuation orders are in place for Fort McMurray, Anzac, Gregoire Lake Estates, Fort McMurray First Nation and Mackenzie County near High Level. Residents of evacuated areas should not attempt to return home.
Emergency gas and diesel are temporarily available along Highway 63.
Albertans can call 310-4455 for information and stay up to date on the Alberta Emergency Alert and Alberta Wildfire apps.
Evacuation information

Emergency fuel stations are operating in safety rest areas in the following locations on Highway 63:
Approximately 60 km south of Fort McMurray
Approximately 100 km south of Fort McMurray at Mariana Lakes; and
Approximately 165 km south of Fort McMurray.
Quantities are limited and will be restricted to motorists who need fuel to get them to the nearest fuel centre.
There are currently eight reception centres operating within the province. Details are available on the Alberta government emergency updates website.
Evacuees should contact Red Cross at 1-888-350-6070 to register their location. It’s important to register to ensure officials know how to reach you and to verify you got out safely.

Thanks for the support. We all need it. It is a great province and a wonderful city. She gets mocked a lot but make no mistake it is my home and we will return.

FYI Fort McMurray residents

Call your bank and defer your mortgage payments for two months. Ask for options. They can spread it out over the term or just tack on two more months at the end of your term. It will help free up money for what you really need. We did this and so have a few friends.

Yup, when the smoke settles, at least a couple high grade gravel roads(paved would be better) looping around and out should be considered for future emergencies.

Just talked to my son who is in downtown Ft. Mac doing some setup with the Emergency Response center, and he says no matter which way he looks, he can see smoke rising, and then the odd black puff which he assumes is a building. Things are OK in downtown Ft. Mac, although he said he can't imagine a war zone looking worse. Breathing is hard and with only paper masks available generally.

Police are not allowing anyone into residential areas without escort apparently; he's had an escort whenever he's had to move in town. Probably for the best to contain any potential looting.
