2016 & 2017 Kodiaks were a 700cc machine and the same size as a Grizzly. 2018 Kodiak went back to 450cc and a smaller machine. The 2018 Kodiak have neither a recoil backup started or diff lock.

The new kodiaks don’t have front diff lock anymore unfortunately. Mistake in my opinion. I have 3 of them as well as a Grizzly. I much prefer the kodiak. And they will pull a moose out of the bush without an issue.

Mine is older but it still gets it done. I think the OP is looking for used under 5K. I'll be the first to admit I haven't looked into a quad for many years the one I have does what I need. Not even sure the year of mine anymore

The 450 has pulled out elk and moose solo many times.

A nice all around machine the won’t let you down at the worst of times would be a 2015 or older Yamaha Kodiak450. IRS, recoil back up starter, front diff lock, etc...

I like the Honda’s but it will be hard to find a mid sized one with IRS and diff lock in your price range. Most of the newer ones don’t have a recoil backup starter either.

Lots of used machines out there with low hours. Stay away from Artic Cat. Every one I’ve been around has been a headache for it’s owner and while every manufacturer can make a lemon Artic Cat seems to have more than their share.

Buy used quad with < 1000km, < 100 hrs. Keep it simple. Look for as clean machine as possible (little to no scratches on plastic, no missing decals, no cuts in seat, tires like new condition, starts instantly, oil clean, air filter is clean and oiled. Buy about $ 0.50/$1.00. Both Yamaha/Honda excellent machines.

My 2002 Honda Rubicon 500 and 2008 Honda Fourtrax ES 420 both will start in a forward gear with the brake lever pulled in.....but not in reverse. Both were bought used and have run for years for me, without anything more than oil and filter changes. Not the smoothest riding but they sure are reliable.

We have a honda 350 (1992) and a honda 250 (1990). You can wear parts out on a honda.....but in my experience they do not break down. Oil changes, a tune up every 3 or 4 years , a new muffler, a brake job and a new starter motor for each unit, new back tires on the honda 250 and a new winch switch for the 350 are the only repairs we have had to do in 25+ years.

And these are working bikes, hauling logs, gravel, fence posts etc....not trail bikes.....(and yes they are used for hunting too)

This is why people like Honda...

Yep I have used Polaris Suzuki Kawasaki and Honda. Currently have a Kawasaki for work and if I could trade it for A Honda I’d do it in a heart beat. can’t beat their reliability and durability. They may not be the fastest or have independent rear suspension but will get the job done 1000x over.

Bought my first Honda in 1984, and still own one today. I have tried many others, but have always gone back to Honda. Just ask all the surveyors out there why they prefer Honda?? I’ve been told reliability, and resale!! Also, if I’m not mistaken, Honda is the only machine that has a mechanical transmission, and is not a belt drive!!

Yamaha is not a belt drive either.

I just don't like the electronic shift of Honda, and I prefer a pull cord because them you always have a way to get it going if the battery does.

Pretty much all Yamaha's are belt driven, infact they are famous for promoting their ultramatic CVT transmission. The old bigbears in the 90s weren't belt driven though.

You sure you have a Kodiak made in the last 20 years Lefty? Lol. Kodiaks are great machines but the Ultramatics came out around 1998 or so. Belt drive since. Though the Yamaha belt drive system is pretty robust. I had a 1999 400 Kodiak Ultramatic and it was great. They got even better in 2005 when the 450 Kodiak came out with IRS, still had the Ultramatic, diff lock, pull start...

Some beauty animals yours has pulled out btw. Congrats.

My last ATV before i left McMurray was a 2002 Yamaha Kodiak 400 bought from John Metcalf at Four Seasons. Awesome unit. Definitley belt drive. lol.

I can attest that the Honda Foreman ES (electronic Shift" can be a real oain if it ever devolpos charging issues. Wont want to shift if it has a hard time charging.

Spent 36 years up there and there is alot i missabout life up there. When i moved out i bought a townhouse in Abasand and i would ride that quad or my Honda 400Ex sport ride to work from behind Abasand to Coneco Equipment in the Mackenzie Industrial Park in the winters after the ground froze up good.

My 97 Kodiak 400 has been an excellent machine. Have to shift gears with it no belt drive, and unfortunately no diff lock either. Have used it to pull an elk and a moose out and it did the job. Had to replace breaks, and a boot on it along with a couple batteries, and spark plugs. Did my first tune up this year on it. Always started and ran but wasn't running super smooth.

I think mine is a 2005, if it does have a belt...I have never had an issue . I had a Bigbear 350 before that. I stand corrected on the belt thing! Usually I assume belts along with issues

Thanks, usually that's all the work the Quad sees, animal extractions and setting up 3d courses.
