Coyote/Deer Gun
Just wondering what would be a good gun for coyote and deer hunting. I'm thinking of getting my son a gun for Christmas and he loves his deer and coyote hunting.

Warren Page developed the 243 Winchester for exactly that purpose, but there are a pile of cartridges that will do the same thing.
For me it doesn't matter WHAT I am hunting with, if I see a coyote it turns into a coyote hunt!

If you are not worried about saving fur i would buy a 257 wby. If you want to save the fur on coyotes buy a 243 and shoot 55gr ballistic tips. For deer bullets in the 85-100 gr range work

Another vote for .243, as Cat mentioned it was developed as a "crossover" round. Cheaper ammo then the .257 Weatherby Mag and less recoil. last week I saw a brand new Sako A7 for sale, 700$ here in Montana. If I wasn't trying to avoid buying another rifle to upgrade optics on several rifles I already have I would have picked it up for my better half. (the little lie I tell her to justify buying a new toy)

A good gun for hunting will be chambered for a cartridge that will let the gun be fired thousands of times to develop marksmanship. A 243 Win cartridge heats the barrel after 25 +/- firings and will get excessively hot with subsequent shot strings.
There is no gun good for coyote and deer hunting. Guns don't hunt.
You will have a life long hunting partner if you develop hunting skills and marksmanship skills.

why would someone shoots 25 rounds without letting the barrel cool?
do this with ANY cartridge and the barrel will be hot....

243 win for lowest recoil option, or 308 win or 270 win for more energy output.
well aimed shots are going to kill coyotes and deer very well with any of these, and the recoil will be manageable.
Get a Ruger M77 Hawkeye All Weather model with 22 inch barrel and never look back.

Yup, we had melted the barrels of 50 calls doing that...so you saying give the fella a pellet rifle? That would prevent overheating after 25 shots...
Op the little 243 will be very adequate for this role and then some.

250 Savage fits both roles better than anything I can think of. (Except 243, of course.) Too bad they're impossible to find in a new off the shelf rifle. I have a well used 22-250 I'm thinking of re-barreling to 250 Sav. with a 1 in 10" twist. 75 gr. V Max for coyotes, 100 gr. TSX for deer. ( I have an old 250-3000 1899 Savage but 1 in 14" twist doesn't shoot 100 gr. bullets very well.)

Tikka T3 in 260 reimington
85 gr sierra for coyotes
130 gr Accubonds for deer/elk/or moose
Got lucky and the 2 loads have the exact 1.5 " high zero at 100 yards. Took some playing around on the load development, but worked out so I never need to adjust the scope.

You are right a gun will get hot if you are firing 25 shots or more in quick succession, so NO most hunting rifles aren't very good for zombie defense.
I think, however, a 243 would be a great low recoil choice for coyotes and deer as they don't often charge you in large groups.

50 cal BMG with 700gr fmj for coyotes, then switch over to the custom hunting bullets for deer. Naaaa to much gun as the barrel gets hot in 25 shoots of rapid fire !!!
Vote for a 243 on up, lots of good cartrages to choose from and piles of brand specific bullets to get the job done.
Good luck in finding what your looking for my friend

Most anything .243" (6mm) or 25 Cal would do well for this.

I bought my son a Browning Hunter xbolt chambered in the 25-06 when he was 13 (16 now), and does very well with it. He has now upgraded to the 7mm Rem mag. My daughter will likely use the quarter caliber now...
The upside is the low recoil, good balistics, and overall versatility. You can hunt everything from gophers to Elk with it, with great bullet options. If you hand load, you can use brass from 30-06, full length resize, and your good to go! Great bullet options form 75g for small creatures pushing 3900fps, to 130g for larger game.
The down side is the less availability for factory loads. Its getting better, but still can be a challenge to find.
For the overall versatility, You cant go wrong.

I vote 25-06. If you Load, try 117 sst's. There are videos out on annealing the jackets to turn them into varmint rounds. Same cost as the v-max but no change in poi. Just Mark the soft ones for use on yotes or 500 yard deer.

man, I shot a .243 for the first time a few weeks ago. Older number with no recoil pad on it at all (just plastic like an old .22), and yet I was astounded by how little recoil there was. It got me hankering for one!

I was really into 243s until I put a couple hundred rounds thru the 6.5x55. A pound or 2 heavier, same recoil and noise, and in this windy country it’s what I’d really count on to get the holes put where they need to be. I suppose a 260 or creed would do the same.

Saving coyote fur = .243
Not saving fur = any caliber that kills a deer will kill a yote. Let him decide. Make a few suggestions and let him do research. He will remember it forever.
My buddy's dad always made them work for stuff and they did it without complaining. One day his dad said "Go get the 4 tires out of the truck and put them in the shop." To this day he will never forget seeing 2 dirt bikes in the back one for him and one for his sister. Awesome memories, especially the unexpected ones.

Another vote for the creedmoor. I set mine up exclusively for a target, longer rande coyote rig. But also something for deer

I would be very skeptical of this working. The lower end of annealing temperature for copper is above the melting point if lead. Copper is an excellent conductor of heat. Not so sure you could get the copper hot enough without melting the lead out of the projectile. Not to mention the polymer tip on the SST.
