Default Vanity Insanity At Tobin Lake

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
http://i672.photobucket.com/albums/v...Vanity0262.jpg
Official pre fish kicks off today for the most prestigous Walleye team tournament in western Canada, the Vanity Cup held Oct 1&2. 160 teams will compete for over $147 000 in cash and prizes and more importantly (according to some teams) bragging rights. With a wait list of over 40 teams there is no dought it is the most popular tournament in the province. The two day total weight catch and release tournament is held on the river portion of Tobin Lake, Saskatchewan just 2 km outside the beautiful town of Nipawin. Tobin Lake has a reputation as one of the best Walleye and Northern Pike fisheries in North America and the tournament showcases this every fall. In 2010 there were over 200 Walleye weighed in over 70cm (9 lbs or more) with the biggest caught by Merv Edel and the late Tom Worbeck at 15.3 lbs.

2010 champions Marvin Koizumi and Cody Earl of Calgary, AB weighed in 52.85 lbs for $50 000 and will be back to defend there title. Tobin Lake slot regulations and Tournament rules dictate that no walleye between 55 and 70 cms may be weighed and only 2 of 5 fish per day may be over 70cms.
http://i672.photobucket.com/albums/v...nZeller001.jpg
Seasoned tournament veteren Dave Kennedy of Wetaskiwin, AB has been on the river for a week now and says fishing has been great with lots of fish being caught. Dave has been fishing the river for 19 years and when asked why he keeps coming back he says its the best fishery hes ever been to and the scenery on the river is unbeatable.

Stay tuned for tourney updates all week.

Default Pre Fish Teasers

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Great weather blesseed anglers today as aproximatly 70 teams launched there boats in the Nipawin Regional Park for another day of pre fishing. Berkley pro Tony Hadi of Regina,SK said fishing got off to a slow start this morning but managed to put 4 overs (over 70cm or 27 1/2 inches) in the boat today including a 80cm 13 lb fish and a 82cm 14 lb monster caught by local outfitter Nicole Jackson who spent the day in the boat enjoying the fantastic fall weather and great company. Tony fishes the tournament every year with his father Sam Hadi and says he predicts it will take 56 pounds over two days to take home the 50 000 cheque and bragging rights. Tony and Sam say that good slot fish (under 55cm/21 1/2 inches) will be key to winning the tournament and plan to run short passes to stay on active fish.

I was talking about PREFISH the week before the tournament. Not everyone shows for prefish. Thats a ton of pressure ! There is no place to hide and no such thing as a secret spot ! I won't get up till Friday , and i'm not too worried.

Default Defending Champs Roll into Town

Cody Earl and Marvin Koizumi came down to Twin Marine late Monday afternoon to put Codys big new Lund into the marina so it gave me a chance to have a drink with last years winners and pick there brains a little bit. Marvin has been fishing the Vanity for 15 years and Cody 12. When I asked them why they come back year after year (10 1/2 hour drive one way) the smiles got wide and they said they wouldnt miss the tourney for anything but ultimatly it came down to the Quality of the Competetion and the fishery. Cody who is sponcored by Normark/Rapala and Lund/Mercury called the Vanity the Stanley Cup of western Canadian Walleye tournaments and Marvin who is representing Pure Fishing echoed that by saying the Tournament is loaded with the absolute best tournament fisherman around so fishing and winning the tournament is an honor. When talking about fishing tactics and techniques in the river Cody says there are no tackle secrets or advantages and it could come down to boat control on Saturday/Sunday. Marvin says that isolating locations that are holding the big fish will be key to defending this year.

Default Drifting a Lindy

I had the opportunity to fish with a tournament pro this past week on the Saskatchewan River from Twin Marine in Nipawin to the mouth at Tobin Lake. I crewed a boat with a fellow forum member who typically fishes with his wife. She was unable to prefish the tourny, so I took her place in the Lund. 5 days in a boat, more than thirty hours of walleye fishing with light gear and tackle (#10 octopus-beak hooks on a 6# fluorocarbon leader 9' long, trailing behind a 1/2 oz tungsten bell sinker) trolling at .5 mph in a river flowing at 10mph with a 25 mph wind! Talk about a steep learning curve at boat control.

Talk about a lesson in extreme patience while using a Lindy rig and hooking giant walleye, successfully bringing them to the boat and into the (personal) record books. BTW. Not every hooked monster makes it to the boat. Sometimes you fight the fish for 5 minutes, just see the weight a couple of times, then gone!!

Many "unders", a ton of "red-zones" and four "overs", including my personal best walleye at 10lb8oz and the next best at 9.5 lbs (or is that 9lb8oz?). Best holes(for me) were at the Cabin and at the Mouth, but the Garbage can, as the Reel Doctor named it (somewhere between Whiterock and Grassy) was good for the "slotties". There were three perch-sized bait stealers to ski in.

Used my Quantum SuperLite PT 7' rod and a Quantum Energy10 loaded with 8lb Vanish mainline.

If Wednesday was Saturday, we would have been on the leader board!

Day five, Friday until 2:00pm, not a fish! Nada. Zip. Nothing. Fishing in the whitecaps is hard. Very hard. Highly recommended for the humbling effect. Proves that there is always a lot more to learn.

I will be back next year, as the hospitality, both from the marina operators and the town, was very gratifying. The pros are all good guys, some of whom I have met and talked with, and the Lund dealer is a superior boat shop to deal with. And, fingers crossed, I might have lined up a ride next Vanity Cup. I hope my friend and his wife are on the leader board going into today's fishing.

Lots of cheats , law breakers and people that can't measure. Team was dq'd for having fish in the boat BEFORE first flight went out , people nailed for using barbed hooks during prefish and guys bringing in fish in the protected slot. Hopefully there will be some names posted ! We had a tough weekend , with only one over on saturday , losing another at the boat which rarely happens , and sunday , forget about it. For those the got their big ones both days , congrats , you earned them. There were alot of excellent anglers that didn't weigh a big fish.

My Boat came in 22nd. Missed one over on Saturday. That would have made a huge difference. But all teams have those stories.. 1000 Bucks richer!! Not really after all is paid for. It is the most humbling and gratifying place I have ever fished. It is unexplainable!!
I would like to give Kudo's to Vanity tournament chair. "Jim Chute" No BS there!!
We need much more of that type of professionalism at our tournaments in Alberta. Maybe something can be learned.
If individuals are going to whine, complain, get ****y and cheat they are not welcome back!! No exceptions!! Vanity is the best tournament I have fished in. Hands down!!

Can't wait to hear all the infractions if they are announced. Should be a bunch of openings ! They are cracking down on everything and apparently the C.O's are concerned about imported leeches , so watch out next year. Its funny to see Jim flip a biscuit , but hes trying to protect the fishery. He will name names. Congrats again to all that placed , i'll spend another year jealous and frustrated !,

Thats too bad...when there is big money involved it will sure bring out the worst in people. I know in some of the past derbies i entered it always says winners could be subject to a polygraph. Always got a chuckle out of that but never heard of it happening. Would love to see them do it, might be surprised with the results

Default Vanity Cup Results

Fishing was great, Topwater and I came in second place and won a brand new 1825 Lund Explorer Sport with a 115 Mercury outboard! I also caught my personal best walleye during the tournament, a 12.90 pound beast!
