Default decent .22?

So after my last thread of considering to sell my rifle due to a flinch/ recoil and wanting to shoot something a little smaller, I decided to take everyone's advice and put a limbsaver on my current one/load dummy rounds (have someone else do it) and get a .22 and practice technique like crazy.

I have a really old cooey bolt action .22 but its in pretty rough shape, plus the wife gave me permission to pick up a new one for my birthday.

So my question now is, which one is worth the money?
I've been looking at the remington 597 heavy barrel and they have got great reviews on cabelas website, anyone have any experience with these or any other recommendations?
My budget is around $250-

Thanks a lot.

If practicing for form i would get a bolt gun just so i could get the muscle memory of cycling the bolt after each shot. I use a savage mk2 for bolt action plinking but the stock may or may not be to small for your style of shooting. Last i checked they fit into that under 250 price bracket.

IMHO, go with a bolt over a semi auto.

I would agree with the bolt action suggestions, lots of good ones out there.

I just picked up a savage mk2 heavy barrel and I must say I was rather impressed the first time I took it to the range.

Ya, after that first post i realized that bolt action was definitely the way to go just to get in the same rhythm as shooting my hunting rifle.
I guess the Savage Mark II-FV is the one I'm gonna shoot for.
Hopefully someone has one in stock here in town in the next few weeks!
Thanks

Ok, now i'm hung up again!
Doing some research and am now debating whether I would be better off looking into a .17HMR or .22 WMR?

The primary purpose would be punching paper, but it would be awesome to be able to shoot some gophers at a decent range and maybe coyotes as well.

Opinions?

Sorry for being so indecisive, but I'm loving all the info from the experts here!

I was out to day with a Mom that never shot before and her boy and 2 friends as it was his birthday.... they shot the lights out with all in black ring at 25yds and some targets all 10 shots in 10 or 100 score .. even mom shot ... they had a blast.. I have a 597 Rem in the hunting with a 4 power Bushnell also have the 30 shot clip so they did some rapid fire too !!! man did those boys have smiles on their faces ..

here is a pic of me Rabbit hunting out here with the 597 great light gun and anyone can shot it

i would still say an accurate 22 would be just as good. my mk2 is accurate enough to hit gophers out to 75 yds if i can do my part and if i put a scope on it im sure i could do better.
as for coyotes many people will say that 17hmr's and 22 mag's will work great but at the ranges they are useful for i would just as well pack a shotgun with good shot and wait for the dog to get a few steps closer.
not to mention 22 ammo is cheeper and easyer to come by (most of the time)

If I was going to get a .22 to try to work on my technique, I would be looking to get as close of a copy of my actual shooting rifle. That way, not only can you practice your bolt technique/loading but you can also practice your cheekweld. Seems like an easy way to save money during live fire.
