Default Stock Options / Painting...Complete with pics!!

Ok so I have plans to order a McMillian for my rifle next year but plan to paint my current factory synthetic stock now as it is an older model 75 with the grey stock and black inserts which I am not to fond of. This will also help me to decide on a color of the McMillian.

Thinking of doing either a Olive drab with black webbing or speckling or black with grey webbing or speckling.

So I am looking for opinions on colors below are some examples and if anyone know where I can get a speckling and or texturing paint. Currently I am looking at using Krylon.

This isn't a color I want for this rifle but a good example of the texture and speckle finish I am looking for.

This is a good sample of a Sako 75 Stock like mine done in Olive drab with a black speckle.

Black with white speckle.

Black with grey webbing.

Olive drab and black webbing.

Who likes what?...I should mention the gun is stainless but have decided to do a bead blast that will make it appear more grey and very dull on all stainless parts.

Thanks,
Mike

I'm not sure about speckling paint, but Michael's carries the webbing paints, had white and black last time I was in there.

Good thread, I've been doing lots of research before I do mine. I'm thinking med gray with black and white webbing.

Are you gonna bead blast it yourself?

Also if you're going krylon, if you want a flat matte black or OD, go with the camo series of krylon paints, they are very flat and non-reflective.

Personally, I wouldn't spend time and $ on a purely esthetic factor that has absolutely no bearing on the utility or huntability of a gun stock I'm only going to keep one season.... UNLESS I thought it would result in a big jump in resale value.

Having said that, I prefer the black and grey.

Not really going to cost me much ...not worried about the resale value on a stock that's 10 years old and its really just a sample to know what I will like on my McMillian.

Black and grey webbing or speckle?

You are not going to be happy with a bead blast any small amount of dirt will show up hard to clean and wears faster in spots.

Wouldn’t waste the spray paint on the stock either just sell it when the McMillian shows up.

I like the webbing more, if done well (not too big or sloppy).

I plan on using some Rustoleum 'Desert Bisque' on a project. Its textured heavily so will offer excellent grip, but perhaps this characteristic will also have negatives. Found it at Home Depot. The cap color is much sandier colored than the web rendition in the link

Ok for now what I think I am going to try is paint the stock black and then try to speckle in some Olive drab and then some black webbing over top. Should look good and should have some texture!!!

I will in a week or so. The gun is getting some work done and should be back in my possession next week sometime.

Default My quick fix for a cheap stock

Truck bed liner to give noise dampening and beefed up palm swell. Foam all voids and a touch of grey on top.

This is my first attempt at splatter finish....gun is a savage 11 in .243 that came with the fugly black stock...I used krylon fusion for the base color as it is designed to bond to plastic so I figured it would hold up better. My only issue with that paint is the slight sheen, even when fully dry...its not as bad as the pic shows but it is there.

Default paint

If you want to achieve a specle finish, get a stiff bristle tooth brusk, and a piece of window screen, about 6" square. apply a small amount of paint to the tooth brush, and while holding the screen 4-6" away from the stock, rub the brush, against the screen, in one direction only, this will splatter, light specles onto the stock, overtop, your base coat.
try it on some cardboard first, to get your technique right.
hope this makes sense.

Well got her put back together and the barrel re-bead blasted as the previous owner had corlanes do some work on it including the fluting and in doing so they remove the factory bead blasted finish and leaves more of a ruger style finish

Before.

After

The Stock isn't shiny like some of the pictures show overall I think I like it but my new stock will probably be plain flat black McMillian.

Thoughts welcome!!

Mike

I just threw on some plasti dip on this old browning I had laying around

Cost about $50 worth of paint and changed the look dramatically, peels off when I want it back to stainless and laminate. Also easy to make a rifle and scope white for winter hunting and not break the bank.
