Wolf tag? What do I do with a wolf?

This goes along with my upcoming moose hunt. I also have a wolf tag for this hunt. For a moose, I know what I can do with that. What do I do with a wolf if I shoot it? I know I can use the pelt, but even then what do I do with the pelt?

Tan the hide or pick your preferred form of taxidermy

I would not recommend eating them but if you are feeling adventurous that could be an option

They are smart buggers and don’t show them selves often but you may get your chance. Guys get a random wolf on big game hunts at times

The same thing would you do with the antlers from a moose.
Trophy/memento, crafts, sell....


PLUS, sleep well knowing you helped the moose population.

If you have the opportunity at a wolf, take it.

You might be able to sell the hide. What about a scull mount. My friend has a full body mount that looks great.

Makes a nice head mount as well, consider yourself lucky if you get one. Bleached skull is awesome.

I don’t think I can bring an “unfinished” wolf head back across the border. And I can’t stick around long enough to have it processed by a taxidermist. It’s probably an exercise in futility as I understand that I probably won’t even see one.

You can always drop it off with an Alberta taxidermist and have them ship it to you later

Wolves in Alberta require a cites permit to be exported so you won't be able to take it back across the border and it takes time but typically an outfitter or taxidermist will do the work to get the permit and ship it to you

If you get an opportunity, shoot a wolf.

Talk to your outfitter ahead of time and ask if he can use the pelt. If he doesn't want it, maybe the outfitter's freezer will quit before you get a chance to do anything with the hide and the outfitter can dispose of it for you.

You could also ask your buddies around home if any of them want a wolf pelt and they can pay for the taxidermy work.

Things may be different now, but for some species like bears the hunter could take them back to the US without any permit as long as they had a hunting licence and they personally took the hide and skull with them across the border. If it had to be shipped to them things got more complicated and I believe a cites permit was needed. Bear bacculum or any claws not attatched to the hide couldn’t go across the border. I thought it was the same for wolves unless the US has some different import laws for them, but I could be wrong. Haven’t been involved in that sort of thing for a few years. Some outfitters may be able to boil and clean a wolf skull or provide the hunter with the equipment to do so. I would definitely shoot a wolf if you have a chance, it’s usually much more difficult to get a shot at a wolf than a moose.

Wolves require a Cites permit and an export permit to get it out of Alberta. The export permit requires the Cites permit number so the Cites has to be obtained first. It can take weeks for each. If a taxidermist or anyone ships the wolf to you, that will require an agent that can get it inspected. Prepare for $hipping/handling charges. It has to be inspected on the US side as well. Neither side makes the process of getting a wolf home easy but it can be done.

Just to give you an example: In the last month I heard about a guy from MT, getting a Euro deer mount shipped from Alberta to MT. The cost was $1700.00 US.

Tanned pelt you can double those prices.
