Default A Good Archery Shop In West Edmonton?

Anyone have any suggestions for a good archery shop on the west side of edmonton, or edmonton in general? I'd like to try a few bows. A large used inventory would be good. I've found a few online I'd like to stop at, but being unfamiliar with the area some advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Trophy book archery is in spruce grove, Sherwood park archery, there's pipestone creek which is closer to millet, and then swamp donkey, and wholesale sports sells bows. Cabelas is also opening next Thursday, so that will open up another option! They all sell good bows, depending on brand you are looking for will determine which shop you would visit!

Stay far far away from trophy book, way over priced and don't give a s#$% about their customers. And last time I heard they don't even have a certified bow tech. They lost some good staff when Richard bought it.

I agree, trophy book does have higher prices, but they have quite a good selection of accessories! I just bought my bow at sherwood park! But I'm buying my daughters at trophy book, they are the cheapest place in town for the genesis bows! Shop around! I know that rests and sights are around 40-50 cheaper at Sherwood park, than trophy book! Have a feeling their prices may fall soon though! Unless cabelas is higher priced than I expect!

Yeah I saw those at WSS they where going for like $600.00 there! I'm only going to settle for a Destroyer 350 if I ever get a bow tech.

for the amount you invest in a bow and accesories.. you owe it to yourself to go to Calgary Archery Center. 3 hour drive is nothing

Definately go to an archery shop.these people specialise and most know thier stuff.Just cause a store sells bows doesnt mean they know all that much about them or the techicalities of shooting them properly and acurately.JMO.

If I was to buy a bow from wholesale, I would get it set up somewhere else! Unless you really know your stuff, and can tune it up properly on your own!

I'm not bashing wholesale! I don't like the brands of bows they carry anyways! But what I am saying is that I would much rather go somewhere with a shooting lane that willingly allows you to try out the bows! Not like wholesale where they have the strings zip tied to the cables!

I'm sorry that you are mad that I don't recommend wholesale for buying a bow! I guess I am still bitter from my first bow, which I actually bought from wholesale back when they were in the old building! I got duped into buying a champion bow, even though they had already gone out of business! ( which i didnt know about for a couple months after buying the bow, as i was new to archery).I did not get any help or even offered any help to set it up for my proper draw or anything! It was not a good experience! Now fast forward 7 years, and I know better, I will stick to the archery shops for my bow purchases, especially as I stated before.....wholesale doesn't carry any of my preferred brands! Now again I'm sorry to have offended you, I'm not bashing your skills as a bow tech, I'm stating my experiences with wholesale as a warning to the OP!

I personally feel you will have your best luck at a bow shop, what happens if I come into wholesale to buy a bow on Tuesday night, and you're not working? The other kid that works there part time after school that just started there can't answer my questions? Is he gonna phone you to ask? I doubt it! At a bow shop, there is always somebody there that knows their stuff! I shop at wholesale, I'm not against spending money there, and I buy archery related stuff there too, but unless they start selling Hoyt or matthews, you'd be hard pressed to see me buy another bow there! Rant over....sorry to make you feel like it's a personal dig at you! It's nothing to do with you! It's my opinion! At the same time, I'm sure if you told me the company I work for turned over a $@&tty house, I would be offended as well! I can see where you're coming from!

Trophy Book in Spruce Grove seemed great when I was in there about a month ago. I picked up a used LH Bowtech Tribute and went in looking to see if they could order me some cam modules to change the draw length. They told me it would be no problem, we'll order them in, call you in a week or two when they come in, then we'll get you all set up. They wrote my information down, including the make/model of my bow and my personal contact info. Was going to buy arrows, release, peep etc from them once the cam mods arrived as these folks seemed to have everything under control.

Fast forward one month, no contact from the shop. I finally called there two days ago asking about the cam mods...no one seemed to know who I was or what I was talking about, even though I was speaking with the gal that helped me earlier. But wait, we JUST had an order come in today...maybe your modules are in the order...what was your name again? And sorry, what kind of bow was it that you need modules for?

Time to find another bow shop...guess I'll check out Cabela's next week

A brand new bowhunter in the waiting but already feeling frustrated about the sport. I just want to get the damn thing set up so I can shoot it!!

Wait for Cabelas to open this week, I was there last night for family night Lawrence from former Accurate archery is running the bow area and they have a great selection, a shooting range and huge amounts of products from what I saw there prices were great. And with Lawrence in there you know you will be getting the right bow in the right size and your bow will be leaving tuned properly.
Careful of Trophy book and Swamp donkey I've heard horrer stories of people leaving with wrong sized bows, poor setups, inflated prices Etc Etc. Just read some of the threads here.

Stoney creek in whitecourt will set up any bow for you to shoot and has a tech in house.prices are reasonable and service is top priority. Its an hour and a bit to get there but worth the drive.

Looks like it's time to straighten out a few misconceptions about archery shops and Certified techs.
In 1979, I started at Porcupine Creek Supply, (Russels), Don Lovo, a retired Olympic Archer owned it back then. Working with Don he instructed me in Bow repairs and setup. I then became a PRO Shooter and a Factory Authorized Tech for PSE!
How does one become a CERTIFIED TECH? The company sends you to the manufacturors Factory, and after a 1,2 or 3 day course, you are deemed a Factory Authorized Tech. There are, to my knowledge NO schools that teach Bow Techs. It is not a recognized trade!
All Dealers are eligible to send employees to the Factory of any of the Bows they carry, to have them take a course in the basic setup and repair of their product. If you're not a complete DUFUS, you receive a nice little Certificate to display on the wall at the shop!

I have a little game that I like to play with the Dealers we have here. I am always buying new Bows, at least one a yr. and sometimes more. I go into different shops and look at a few bows of interest, try and check out the service area and I ask STUPID questions and wait for the answers that I know are correct. If the sales staff try's to talk me into something I don't want I leave, if they have to ask someone else to give me an answer, I leave, if they try to sell me Mustang parts for a Pinto, I leave. If they are honest and at least have the basic knowledge of the bow I originally wanted with the accessories I want, I start to deal!
Haggle, there is $ in all the accessories, that's where you can deal!

Good shops that I have bought from and still go to!
Trophy Book: the young Lady has more knowledge than most people in the industry. I let her setup my last Z7 Extreme, No Problems!! $1800.00 all in!
Pipestone Creek:
Jim is a Great Bow Mechanic, basically self taught, and yes he pushes the stuff he carries, but that's what his reps supply him!
WSS:
Gerry knew me from my Pro days, so we always got along on the LIMITED stock they carried.
Sherwood Park:
Pre Dallas, Hated the shop, lousy service, really high prices!
Dallas, yes, most the other Tattoed, arrogants NO! Prices still a little high but not butt sore high!
It's the closest shop to me, but I have had a couple of bad experiences with the staff (not Dallas) so I no longer go there!
No where in Red Deer!
C. A. C.:
Have to see now that they have lost Craig.
L.O.S.T. Arrow (Wainright)
Small shop, similar to Pipestone, Neil knows his stuff! Prices are not too bad!

The husband/Wife shop in Edson, deserves mention also, sorry but I don't remember the name right now, but I do stop in every time I go by there. Back a few years, when Joe at SPA, was selling Whisker Biquits for over $100.00, I could buy them there for a little over $75.00!

I have NO affiliation with any of the above, take the info I have provided as personal experience and nothing more!
But, at last count, I had owned and traded over 100 bows, and there is NO money in being a Bow Tech, unless you own the store!
Just in case someone needs to know why I don't do it for a living anymore!

Alot of Archery shops are using Zip Ties on the cables. We do at the shop here. Have someone who does not want to wait for you to help them while you are helping another customer and he grabs a bow and fires it, blows it apart and then cannot afford to pay for it.......... after having 4 done in a year that is alot of money coming out of our pockets....... Zip ties can be cut really fast if the person wants to try it out with an arrow on it....... We had a guy the other day come into the shop and proceeded to try to pull the string back with the zip ties on it, even after we told him to hold on we would take them off and put an arrow on it for him, he just kept pulling until we took the bow from his hands......

the reason shops zip tie cables and strings is becouse people dry fire bows.. dont draw a bow with out an arrow in it. had a carbon element blowen up last week by a guy that was in the shop...then he ran out the door...thank god it was only a string that had to be replaced..

Creates lots of issues.
The zip tie is a good idea, and shops need to make sure the bow with the arrow on it is at a shooting lane!! We were in a shop that insisted the guy put an arrow on the string to draw it, and he lost control of the string and shot the arrow in a busy store.
If there is no lane to use, a dry fire is prefered to the chance of shooting other customers. Not all dry fires are intensional. If a release or fingers fail, you can have a big problem.

Talk about people scattering in a hurry. Fastest I ever saw the Gun counter staff move in that store.
