Default Big Bull Elk Down!

GR81's Log........

I climbed into my stand at 06:15. I started with some cow calls at 06:30 & continued with them for my first few calling sessions. I threw in a bugle at about 06:50, and then continued cow calling. This bull bugled back at about 07:10. I then started a mix of cow calls & bugles. He bugled about 6 or 7 times on the way in, and each time he was a little closer. Finally he couldn't take it anymore & busted out of the brush at about 25 yards. I came to full draw, but he stopped behind a birch tree. I waited, and he let out a bugle & urinated. He stepped from behind the birch, I settled my pin, and released....whap! The arrow struck the boiler room & off he went. There was about 5 inches of arrow sticking out, so I waited for 1/2 hr, and then took up the blood trail. There was not very much blood at all & I didn't recover my arrow. Now I have been on many blood trails both good & bad. This one was looking exceptionally bad. At one point I lost the trail, and as I was sweeping to find it I spotted my bull. He had only travelled about 100 yards or less. I was ecstatic! 5x6 with lots of mass & long points.

Great bull! That's some thick brush you had to track him through. Way to go.

Good comitment to calling pays off sometimes. I always wondered if I was overcalling.

Way to go GR81. That's a heck of a bull - especially with the bow. That must have been wild hearing him come in. I can't think of anything much more exciting that bringing in a bugling bull elk.

Thanks a lot for the pictures and story.
