The gutless field dress
Hey all,
I've been doing a lot of reading and watching videos on this method of field dressing. I was wondering if any one had thought about this method or maybe you use it already. I have no quad not horse, everything is done by my own foot power. Here's a video and a little read. Let me know your thoughts are.

Been using it for many years. Very efficient way to breakdown an animal.
Haven't seen the video in the link, but the best video I have seen can be found on ELK101 website. They have it as a downloadable app too.

it's great, although I like to keep eat the heart as well so I have to bust ribs to get at that.

I have also been researching this method for this upcoming season. From all the videos and reviews Ive read its the way to do it for packing it out on foot.
Plan on trying this for my first bow kill this year, elk/mule. Will be hunting solo, I'm also planning on bringing some small rope maybe even a small pulley to help hold the quarters up and manoeuvre the meat during cutting.

I've been taken through the lesson on an elk a couple years back. I'd like to give it a go on my own now since it's so much more convenient with the bigger animals.
Here's another good link that walks through the process.

If you have to pack things out or do not have access to equipment to haul things out, etc.....no question it is a good method.
We prefer to extract our animals whole and process them back in my garage that is set up to deal with whole animals....them swing them into the walk I. Cooler to chill and age.

I did it last year and will be doing it from now on. If i can get the truck to the moose.... i can have it loaded and ready to go home in half hour tops. Great fun. Makes life easier.

Seems this is gonna be the way to go, I'll have to try it this year. Anything to make it a little easier will be a great hand. The videos make it look really easy, hopefully it's just as easy when I try.

abandon, destroy or allow the edible meat of any game bird or big game animal (except cougar or bear), to become unfit for human consumption
This is from the Hunting Regs.

Do you put the animals you kill in the freezer whole?

In the video they leave a lot of usable meat on the carcass. Do you know what the flank is? What can be made of it? They also say to check the regs for your area.
Also I was only stating what the regs say about leaving edible meat.

You are correct! Well I prefer it you do leave dome behind. I know a guy that knows a guy that got charged with wasted. CO said the ribs had meat as well as the flank! Well it's a great technique it leaves room for error!

Exactly what I'm getting at! Didn't ever say if I had or hadn't done the same myself.

Taking flank has nothing to do with it being gutless.

You can do full gutless and skinned moose in less than half an hour without a tractor or a hoist? And load it in the back of a truck?
Are you sure you meant moose and not mouse?
....
I am guessing you mean you load your animals whole into the back of a truck if you can get the truck close enough....in less than half an hour.

Yes.. with a havalon.. even lower limbs can be removed with a havalon. Piranta edge is a gidt from the gods.
Although if i get an elk... i think im going to debone on sight and see how that goes. One thing i learned from a friend... is carry some emergency space blankets... to put quarters or deboned meat on. Keeps it clean. And they are cheeeeeeeap. Those silver thinga all folded up neat.

First time trying it? No. 7 animals later and last being a friends moose i challenged myself against the clock and it was 27 minutes on the stop watch. Skin a side, remove quarters trim ribs off like a blanket.. backstraps. ... Tenders.. trim neck out and all scraps. Flip repeat. Althouth my friend did put the quarters in the game bags so i guess you got me there.
As you know... its not my first rodeo with moose and it wasnt a very big moose on that one. Not a monster.
For the record im willing to help anyone hunting wmu936 ( not so far away) do thiers ..for the extra practice.. and put my Badlands OX to work

We were using the gutless method long before it became the "gutless" method.
We take the heart, liver, tenderloins and ribs with us. Nothing gets left behind.
