Range Finders On The Prairie
I have a cheap range finder. It doesn't work well on the flat prairie. Do the most expensive range finders work on the flat prairie.

General rule of thumb is on an animal size target you should be able to pick up around half the distance that it’s rated for. Like all things optics and tech you get what you pay for to some degree, nowadays the tech has gotten better so the age of your rangefinder is also possibly a factor.

My Sig Sauer 2200 will range antelope at 1,284 yards and probably farther but that's the farthest I have tried it, I know it will range a coyote at over 800 yards

You can do this free handed.

Last few days I had issues with my Sig Kilo 2000 even ranging deer at 300yds.
I think it didn’t like being in the cold. I had it in a pouch on my chest harness, and it wouldn’t range. I then put it in my coat pocket behind my chest harness to warm it up and I was able to range a herd at 330yds and we made a quick, clean kill.

I can certainly do this by ranging the ground the animal is standing on but if you can hold on an antelope at 1300 yards or a coyote at 800 yards you must be steady as the leaning Tower of Pizza.

You shouldn’t be picking up the ground and not the animal
The animal will be better target
High quality rangefinders are more expensive because they are better
Better beam width, more accurate ranging, features like nearest and furthest objects. Which helps a ton in conditions like snow and fog
Picking up antelope 1300 yards away Is easy

The swaro 8x30 laser guide is a great range finder with second to none optics, however the beam is very wide and I did not like it on the flat land prairies. Sold it and have a Sig and a Gunwerks. My Sig also acted up on me the other day in the cold weather. So I snuck up nice and close and shot me a good buck. Haha.

A good solid rest for your elbows and yes it's not that difficult

I have a Zeiss Victory range finder. Every year I test it at a couple known long distance yardages on our hobby farm. It's always right on.

I was out with 4 other guys a couple weeks ago on a beautiful afternoon doing some long range shooting, we had targets set out starting at 724 yards and out to 1224 yards, 3 different brands of range finders, I had my sig sauer KILO 2200, there was another sig sauer KILO5K, a Leica and a Leopold, we were all ranging the targets to see if there was a difference between them, from the same place on the bench never more than 2 yards and that was at the 1224 yard target.

My Nikon Laser 30 was ranging deer out to 730m this season.
I've been enjoying it since upgrading from the Nioon prostaff I used to run.
