Default Make Sure The Animal Is Dead

And this is what can happen if you grab a whitetail buck by the antlers, and it isn't dead. A friend sent me the article from a Facebook site.

Recommend, approach All downed animals from side and touch the eye with your gun barrel. A dead animal eye will never blink.

Chicks dig scars I've heard, but still, some things just shouldn't be done.

That is going to need a couple steri strips for sure. I walked up to give a moose a finishing shot in the head from about 5’. Didn’t realize it could still get up. It came at me and I tripped. It’s a good thing my son was there to give it another shot. My camo pants were a lot heavier after that.

That is a serious head gash, wow.
Never assume, approach from side and poke it in the eye.

I always take out the binos and look at the eyes before approaching.

Closed eyes = alive
Open, not blinking = dead

But ALWAYS approach cautiously and poke it in the eye from the side as others have said.

Damn!

That's gonna smart for a long time.

Yup, approach from the side or better still from behind.

Dad taught me to poke them in the butt, if that doesn't get a reaction, poke your knife into one ankle bone. If that doesn't cause a twitch they are dead.
Until then expect them to be alive.

That dude got off lucky, an antler to the stomach is far worse and much more likely to be fatal.

Yeah…oops.

Wrestled one off the edge of a coulee by the horns. Two arrows through him and 98% dead, but 2% was almost enough for him to get even. Anyone who may think it’s like throwing a big calf, I can assure you it’s not. Young and hopped up on adrenaline. Next time I’ll just get some rope.

Poke him in the eye if he doesn't blink all motor functions are out,if he blinks then his involuntary system is working. That can also lead to his voluntary system kicking in and you get a horn in the melon. Poking him in the butt only tells you he is out,how out is he really.

The guy should shave his head and go work for Tesla ,he has there logo for life on his pumkin.

On serious note just darn lucky his eye or face never got it , an extra bullet means nothing if your not sure ,beat's getting stitches.

I was taught you always approach from the back side when in close proximity , and never on the low side ( hooves) - always along the back .
Slightest twitch or a closed eye and they get another at the base of the neck.
I carry low velocity rounds just for that .

Yup, and the poke in the ankle does exactly the same as a poke in the eye, but is a lot safer.

Very luck and a good warning,

I friend of mine got in a wrasslin match with a mule deer and I was there with a rifle but dared not shoot as it would not have been safe...

He had hit it in the back of the head but it was a glance off so deer was stunned so he grabbed and antler turned his head and stabbed the jugular behind the windpipe (missed the carotid) and the deer went ape**** jumped up and he held onto an antler and then held onto both antlers and wrestled it until it went down again from blood loss.

The deer was not trying to purposly gore him bt was more thrasshing around to get away.

I asked my buddy why he didn't just let go... he said he wasnt dragging it further as we could drive up to load it up...

Then I got the rest of the story... when is knife dropped into the stubble it landed blade up. So he had lots on his mind and felt his best bet was to hang on...and not fall onto his knife if he let go...

funny story now but pretty scary at the time....

Few years back an American did not listen to his quide and wandered off by himself, shot a grizzly bear. He started skinning bear it got up and ran off with hide on half skinned leg flapping. Best to be sure animal is dead before removing the hide especially grizzly bears.
